  • Daniel Johnston EXHIBIT at Redbud Gallery in Houston, Tx Jan 26 - Mar 31

    REDBUD GALLERY presents:

DANIEL JOHNSTON (In collaboration with his sister Marjorie Johnston) "Drawings To Listen To And Songs To Look At"

Please be our guest for the opening reception of Daniel Johnston's exhibit "Drawings To Listen To And Songs To Look At". We are always excited about presenting new never before created works of art by the world-renowned outsider poet, writer, and musician Daniel Johnston. In collaboration with his sister, artist Marjorie Johnston, they have created these works which contain lyrics of some of his over 900 songs, depicted in over 100 watercolors and collages. Each piece has the song and CD title identified on the piece.

Waller, Texas based 58-year-old Daniel Johnston has been active in the music scene since the late 70's. He is considered a self-taught pop rocker. His art and music, many times inappropriate, is largely based on his obsession and unrelenting love with a girl named Laurie from high school. Johnston's songs have been cover recorded by several hundred artists, including David Bowie and Tom Waits. His life has been documented in the film "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Johnston's work was shown in a recent Whitney biennial. His famous slogan of "Hi, How Are You?" first debuted in Austin. The late Kurt Cobain mused that Daniel Johnston is the best song writer in America.

Drop by the gallery for a rare treat. We hope that Daniel will be present during the opening after his recent hospital-stay. Redbud will have over 100 original signed framed works starting at $650.

  • AUSTIN DECLARES JAN. 22 ‘HI, HOW ARE YOU’ DAY

By Claire Ricke | January 19, 2018 @11:47 AM SHARE

AUSTIN, Texas – In an effort to celebrate mental wellness, Austin Mayor Steve Adler has declared Jan. 22 “Hi, How Are You” Day.

The iconic piece of Austin street art serves a purpose beyond a tourist attraction. Located at the corner of Guadalupe and 21st Street, “Hi, How Are You” was painted by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, who has dealt with his own mental health issues.

Co-founders Courtney Blanton and Tom Gimbel created the “Hi, How Are You” Foundation based on the art piece to promote mental well-being and educate communities on mental health issues. Their goal is to spark a conversation and help those suffering in silence find someone to talk to.

“However people are, whatever they are dealing with, you could be the turning point in that moment. Sometimes people just need to be heard,” states the foundation’s website.

On Jan. 22, Austinites are encouraged to check on a friend, neighbor, or family member and say “Hi, How Are You?” The day was picked to honor Johnston, whose birthday is Jan. 22.

Then at 8 p.m., a night of music and art will kick off at The Mohawk with performances by Moving Panoramas, Kathy McCarty, Cowboy Diplomacy, Jane Ellen Bryant, Will Courtney, Josh T. Pierson & Jonathan Terrell and a special guest.

Daniel Johnston Adds San Francisco Show to FInal Tour

Today, Daniel Johnston, the iconic songwriter, performer and visual artist, adds a San Francisco show to his rare, final tour across North America this fall - November 4 at Herbst Theatre.

In the various shows, Johnston will be joined onstage by distinct backing bands he has influenced. In New York City, Johnston's band will consist of members of Beirut, Cibo Mato and more; and in Los Angeles he'll be joined by Mike Watt, Ben Lee, Maria Taylor, members of Silversun Pickups and more. Previously announced bands include Jeff Tweedy & Friends in Chicago; Built to Spill in Portland and Vancouver; The Preservation All-Stars (Preservation Hall Jazz Band) in New Orleans; The Districts and Modern Baseball in Philadelphia; members of Fugazi in Washington, DC; and a special guest TBA in Boise. Please see below for an itinerary of confirmed dates; more will be announced soon.

For each concert, Johnston has invited the band to create the set list, choosing songs from the total of 121 Johnston has released over the course of his career. The shows will begin with a screening the Sony Pictures Classics documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005), winner of the Documentary Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Johnston will also perform on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic on November 1, joined by a band consisting of Watt, Lee and Taylor, as well as Guy Blakeslee and Joey Waronker.

Tickets for the Washington, DC show go on sale at 10am pacific/1pm eastern on Friday, September 8. Tickets for the other dates are currently on sale.

Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing, international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists-among them Yo La Tengo, Eddie Vedder, Sparklehorse and more-have covered his songs. And he has collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair, the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth. A hero of Tom Waits, Beck, Wilco, and the late Kurt Cobain, Johnston has recorded over 30 albums and has written over 500 songs. He was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial.
