Philadelphia Listener Supported Public Radio station WXPN (88.5 fm) have a sort of promo thing going on, playing 885 (get it?) of the greatest songs ever, as chosen by guest artists, fans, internet polling, etc.

They have been tallied, and have been playing these songs in order all week, and it has made for some wonderful and sometimes surprizing listening. (You can go to www.xpn.org for an up-to-the-hour- track listing)

On their website are Top-10 lists posted by everyone from Michael Stipe to G. Love to the Station Manager. Anyway, here is Rhett Miller's top 10:

WXPN (88.5) all time 885 greatest songs

Top 10 by Rhett Miller (Old 97's)

1. KINKS – Waterloo Sunset
2. PIXIES – Wave Of Mutilation
3. BELLE & SEBASTIAN – La Pastie de la Bourgise
4. BOB DYLAN – Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright
5. BIG STAR – September Gurls

6. DANIEL JOHNSTON – Speeding Motorcycle

7. DAVID BOWIE – Life On Mars
8. WILLIE NELSON – Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground
9. ELVIS COSTELLO – Pump It Up
10. ROBYN HITCHCOCK – Linctus House

Pretty cool, huh? Not sure if it made the top 885 playlist, but I will check when it's over and get back. Surf over to the site if you get the chance...you can stream it live and the list is up for all to see. Makes for a great "Oh yeah, I forgot about that song..." kinda feeling.

Be interesting, seeing how Daniel fans are the coolest, to make our own "Top 10 Best Songs of All Time." Honestly though, it's too broad a choice for me. I'd have to limit it by decade, or style, or...

Oh Hell. Why not?!

Let's play. I'll work on mine, you work on yours, and we'll meet back here (TOP TEN topic) to post our choices in the weeks ahead.

Have fun.

I realize, in trying to come up with this Top 10 thing, my conflict: I dislike lists. I am anti-canon. In creating a list (ala Nick Hornby) one contributes to the mediocrity and homogenization of the very thing the list is purporting to define. To dissect is to destroy. It's Rock and Roll for Christ’s sake!

That said, I am approaching this as something fun rather than something academic. Surely a review of the last 50 years of popular songs would inherently destroy any ambitions of narrowing down (in order) the BEST SONGS EVER. Going over the forum boards at www.xpn.org, one thing is clear: You can’t authentically create a list which expresses everyone’s opinion of what is good. A song is invisible. It comes out of a speaker and floats in the air until it enters a listening portal, like your ears. It is art.

Of course the Beatles could easily occupy the top positions of such a list. I personally would have to add my favorites in general, and then find the song they are best represented by. Radiohead, Neil Young, Dylan, U2, Wilco, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, R.E.M., Beck and so on. But I also must consider Pavement, Lemonheads, The Stooges, The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana, as well as the Jackson 5, Willie Nelson, Elvis, Dean Martin...  Songs that mean something to ME. Impressions made years ago which can still cause one to pause, turn up the radio (in theory) and smile. (see: Tom Stoppard’s play “The Real Thing,” where the fulcrum of his main character’s life is represented by the Monkee’s “I’m a Believer!”)

So, in no particular order of importance or quality, here is a listing of great songs which make me smile when I hear or play them. (It is rare these days to actually HEAR your favorite songs on the radio if they are not part of this USA corporate generic so-called Rock‘n Roll Canon.) I think they are wonderful, and as such, I am choosing here the less obvious “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” or “Sweet Jane” or “Wish You Were Here,” in favor of some slightly overlooked or under-represented gems.

Roger Miller-King of The Road
Ray Stevens-El Paso
Roy Orbison-Crying
The Kingsmen-Louie Louie
Barry Mann-Who Put The Bomp
Fats Domino-Blueberry Hill
Buddy Holly-Everyday
The Troggs-Wild Thing
Stevie Wonder-Superstition
Springsteen-I’m on Fire

This could continue all day. I hope the Fan Forum members out there will add some color and spice to this post. I am interested in what YOU really get up and move to, or cry to, or lay down and dream to, not what Blender or Rolling Stone or Lester Bangs (may he rest in peace) would confer as most influential or pivotal.

PS- I excluded Daniel from the list cuz, well, it's on his forum, and of course I'd pick "Speeding Motorcyle" or "Walking The Cow" or "I Killed the Monster"... dozens really. I also left off more contemporary rockers. I don't know why. Help me out here, friends...

PSS-
For those REALLY interested, I'm including the lyrics to perhaps one of the first post-modern pop songs done well over 20 years before post-modernism beacame a term!

"Who Put the Bomp"

One of my favorite songs, ever.
I had the 45 when I was a little boy, and played it on an old RCA 45 player that was tube based, had a built-in speaker and was made outta that hard industrial NASA like plastic that lasted forever and would never break.
Because of the tubes, the thing would get HOT after about 20 minutes of play. What wonderful associations were created sitting at the kitchen table in the cold coal mining town of Ashley, Pennsylvania, my arms wrapped around that player, my face up against the little speaker, the “on” switch glowing orange and these beautiful invisible words spinning around and around, making all the sense in the world to me.

A song about the joy, love and heartbreak of a song-writer, his song, inside a song....

WHO PUT THE BOMP
©1961 Barry Mann/Gerry Goffin

I'd like to thank the guy who wrote the song
That made my baby fall in love with me.

Who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp?
Who put the ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong?
Who put the bop in the bop-she-bop-she-bop?
Who put the dip in the dip-de-dip-de-dip?

Who was that man? I'd like to shake his hand,
He made my baby fall in love with me.
Yeah!

When my baby heard
"Bomp-a-ba-bomp a-bomp-a bomp-bomp",
Every word went right into her heart,
And when she heard that singing
"Ram-a-lam-a-lam a-lam-a-lam-a-ding-dong",
She said we'd never have to part.
Well!

Yeah!

Each time that we're alone,
"Boogety-boogety-boogety-boogety boogety-boogety-shoop"
Sets my baby's heart all aglow,
And every time we dance,
"Dip-de-dip-de-dip, dip-de-dip-de-dip",
She always says she loves me so.
Well!

Yeah!

[Spoken]
Darling,
Bomp-a bomp-a bomp-a bomp,
My honey,
Ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong for ever,
When I say dip-da-dip-da-dip-da-dip,
You know that I mean it from the bottom of my boogety-boogety shoop.

Who was that man? I'd like to shake his hand,
He made my baby fall in love with me.
Yeah!

Who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp?
Who put the ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong?
Who put the bop in the bop-she-bop-she-bop?
Who put the dip in the dip-de-dip-de-dip?

God. I still can't believe it. Thunder Road?
Anyway, I came up with dozens more, and upon reflection, my list sounds like a 70 year old man posted it! It was a good idea at the time...

Yeah danaisgone, some good choices. I actually named my cat Foot-Foot after that song (and the poor little guy in Gummo, of course) shocked
I heard awhile ago that there was to be a film made about the Shaggs by the same guys who did the Blair Witch Project, but nothing lately. I wonder if it's still greenlighted, or did they burn too many bridges?

Ever hear Mo Tucker's version (with DANIEL!) of Pale Blue Eyes on "Life in Exile After Abdication?" Very velvet.

Writing down 10 songs like you did, that just "jump into my head," could make for a very interesting psychology experiment, like word association or the ink blot stuff. Kind of give a clue as to where one may be "fixated."

Not sure what psychological evaluation to make based on yours, but it involves sex, guns, and pussy behind the garage. cheesy

Ha ha thunder road.

Yeah, I heard about a shaggs movie a long time ago.. Years actually, and the last thing i heard was Tom Cruise wanted to produce it... Think that's wild? Well MADONNA was going to produce a bio-pic on Darby Crash (the Germs)

I've Never heard the mo tucker song with daniel.. but now that i know it exists i'm going to have to do some serious searching.

As for a psychological evaluation... I just wanted to look cool! wink

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about any of the following: Pale Blue Eyes actually features both Daniel and Lou Reed on backing vocals, but someone decided it was dangerous to have them meet, so they recorded at different times. (I assume this has to do with the alleged fact that Reed gave Jonathen Richman the book that drove him bonkers so that for years he was unable to write or perform any music that was evil - evil being defined as "anything capable of waking a baby".) However, on the tour of New York designed to keep Dan out of trouble, he ended up on one of his most notorious adventures, as has been described in various magazine articles.

What you really need to hear is Daniel's solo number on the same LP (Mo's not involved at all, as I recall, even though it's her freakin' record!)- definitely one of his VERY best and most hauntingly beautiful, and almost never heard or mentioned because the album has never been rerelased since its original issue! I don't know how many times I've borrowed, taped and lost that dang thing!!!

 - Not Daniel

(I could swear I logged in already, but at least this way the quotes will work right -- for that matter, is there any real benefit to logging in, if like me you "sign" each post anyhow?)

Awesome list, cisumevil. Nice to see Zappa and that totally infectious The La's song. Have you heard the cover of Oldham's (excuse me, Bonnie's) "I See a Darkness" which Johnny Cash does? Oldham sings backup. It will bring Goddamn tears to your eyes.

That 'Mo Tucker' song on Life in Exhile After Abdication which Daniel does
is called "Do it Right." It is credited to Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston, and is the closing track. It's just Daniel on vocal and piano, with Maureen singing back-up vocals. TRANSCENDENT!

It is one of my favorite records of all time, with appearances by Jad Fair, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lou, Lee Renaldo, and Kramer, who engineered. Many more talented folks joined the party as well.

I brought the record with me to a Mo Tucker gig at this tiny place called the East End Cafe in Newark, Delaware a few years back. She was hanging out with her band, setting up her ****. Very approachable. For me, it was almost like meeting a Beatle, y'know? We chatted, she signed my record, laughing, "Oh, so YOU'RE the one that bought this!" She seemed very humble and almost surprised. It was a great show, with her on guitar(!) She and her band did a bunch of stuff from all her albums (all worth getting, by the way) and a number of Velvet tunes (After Hours, All Tomorrow's Parties, Pale Blue Eyes, What Goes On, etc)

I've told this story before, elsewhere somewhere here in the D.J. forum, but allow me a "elderly" moment of repeating myself: at one point between songs, someone in the audience of less than 60 people shouted out "Tell us a funny story about John Cale!" She paused a beat, looked at the guy, and quite serious and deliberately said, "There is nothing funny about John Cale."

I love that!

My recollection is that Jad had already written the lyrics but didn't have a melody for it and during a break in the Life in Exile recording sessions Daniel took a look at the lyrics and put them to music in less than 5 minutes. Moe was listening and instantly fell in love with the song.

At first she wasn't sure whether or not to include the track on her album but apparently Sterling Morrison talked her into it. This tidbit was told to me by Sterling himself. He also said it was his favorite song on the album.

This actually reminds me of the best coversong that never happened.  When the VU briefly reunitited a few years ago I told Sterling (who had been living in Houston for years) about my fantasy of them doing a a really long version of Speeding Motorcycle (kind of in the style of Sister Ray or perhaps White Light/White Heat) and he loved the idea but sadly it was never to be.

God. I still can't believe it. Thunder Road?
...
i really like mary lou lord's version of thunder road on the same record she covers  daniel's speeding motorcycle

it was recorded outside or in subways in boston or something...
can't remember the name right now and i am at work...

i have a queation though about ms. lord and daniel that i asked elsewhere but will take the answer to anywhere i can get it...
is that her on the target commercial doing speeding motorcycle and if not who is it?
it sounds liek her voice but it definitely is not the version on the record i have...
that is greta record of hers though...
she does some great covers by the boss, daniel, the pogues, sahwn colvin, big star, richardthompson, bob dylan, magnetic fields etc... just wish i could remember.... oh damn i remember now...it's called "live city sounds"... but again that is not her version on the target commercial or if it is she went into a studio to do it over...

1. Be My Baby - The Ronettes
2. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
3. Here Comes a Regular - The Replacements
4. Pissing In a River - Patti Smith Group
5. Let's Get it On - Marvin Gaye
6. Phantom of my Own Opera - Daniel Johnston
7. Blame etc - Afghan Whigs
8. Heebie Jeebies - Little Richard
9. I Heard Her Call My Name - Velvet Underground
10. 1 - Sigur Ros

Most of these songs are old 'cause I am. But they all make me smile for different reasons
