i would, without hesitation, say "story of an artist".

This one itīs very difficult...He has so many classics Like "Walking the Cow", "Casper the Friendly Ghost", "Speeding Motorcycle".
Also, his new stuff is amazing, like "Forever", "Dream Scream".....

But would agree and pick "Griviences".....Itīs the songs of songs.....an overview of most elements on Danielīs  imaginary and themes.....

Itīs the song that has everything built in.......I really would like to know if it was the first song he wrote (the first of the recorded ones).

I would have to say that for me it is a three way tie between

"syrup of tears"
"hate song"
and
"phantom of my own opera"

'I'm a Song' from The Lost Recordings 1, or 'Everlasting Love' from 'Why Me?'

What about "Some things last a long time" from "1990"?

A very simple song but one, that has always struck me deeply.

I'd go for "Peek-a-boo" from "The What of Whom". It stops me dead in the tracks each time I listen to it.

It's a truely impossible answer.....so let's not go there ok?  Pretty much all of Dan's 80's and early 90's stuff is genius....say no more. RAWR!!!

I've heard Daniel answer the question as to which is his favorite or "best" song and he answers "Greivances" without a second thought.

Interesting...

To finally jump in here, I have to say that I automatically think it's Grievances, but in truth, nothing beats "An Idiot's End". Grievances may be more personal or essential or whatever, but the word-work and imagery in An Idiot's End is pure world-grade songwriter at peak performance level. A knockout.

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...
