I'm a new fan of Daniel Johnston, and I was just wondering what his best songs are.

My favorite so far is the song "Urge" off of Songs of Pain

I think his top three "RadioSongs" (as in the ones most popularly listened to) are...

Casper the Friendly Ghost
Speeding Motorcycle
The Story of an Artist

or atleast those are those ones most of my peers like... The story of an artist blows my mind every time. you should check it out.

you would be amazed though at how awesome some of his lesser known songs are. I just ordered the tape "Dont be scared" and i cant wait. I bought it just for the song "my yoke is heavy" which is on youtube if you search it.

That song is sooo good. My favorite is probably Some Things Last A Long Time. And Grievances. That song is amazing.

I am sometimes suprised at how few of the non-"headline" songs seem to get overlooked by the cover artists. Some that spring to mind are 'Evening Stars' (one of my favourites), 'The Wedding'  and 'How I love the organ music'.

I wonder if Jeff knows if there was ever a longer version of "Take a little walk" recorded? That to me would have been one of the lead candidates for the Daniel Johnston Beach Boys song. I can almost hear Brian Wilson singing it in his 60's voice. It would have been great on the 'Friends' album. I would have loved to have heard a Beach Boys produced Daniel Johnston record from that early 80's period. Or maybe Elvis Costello produced? I mean, if Daniel had turned up at Stiff Records in 1981, his whole story would have been entirely different.
