Captain Kangaroo you bet!
SONG FOR THE CAPTAIN
When I woke up this morning, I noticed something wrong,
And sure enough I turned and you weren't there.
It didn't quite sink in at first: "There must be some mistake?"
I mean, you'd always seemed to really care.
But you were truly gone, along with my supposed "friends",
And all the good times that we'd had were through.
I told myself it didn't matter -- then I sat and cried.
Oh, how I miss you, Captain Kangaroo.
See, I'd worshiped Bunny Rabbit, as a hero and a friend
No purer soul my young heart could perceive.
Though everybody told me he was just a sweaty hand hand,
I didn't listen... I was too naive.
Then came that fateful day when you were both gone from my screen --
He'd trick not one more carrot out of you.
I said a prayer for Mister Green Jeans, and dear old Mister Moose.
Oh, God I miss you, Captain Kangaroo.
Now I've grown older, wiser -- I know why Grandfather Clock
Always hid his wrinkled face behind his hands.
He'd kept my childhood all that time, but childhood has to die.
That's something that I finally understand.
And so I tell myself that I've at last become a man,
And usually I believe that that is true.
But down beneath it all, I still can hear this fervent plea --
"Come back to me, Captain Kangaroo."
So let's say a prayer for the Dancing Bear,
and dear old Mister Moose --
God I miss them, Captain Kangaroo!
