Daniel Johnston music in upcoming Grand Theft Auto

Daniel Johston's music will be heard in Grand Theft Auto IV.  No word on what tune, but his brother received a call while I was hanging around at their sound check.

I'd be skeptical if it was for guitar hero.  This is absolutely true.  The news came straight from Dick Johnston.

The problem is that now Daniel's music will be associated with stealing cars and killing policemen.  What's to love about that?

Well, if you can't separate reality from a video game then you probably don't get it. I happen to like video games a lot, and this is one of the ones I happen to like! You can listen to Daniel's music and go kill a police officer or steal a car in real life too... Would that also cause his music to be associated with those things if someone did it in real life?

 

It's like blaming Marilyn Manson for school shootings, totally baseless and stupid. I guess Willie Nelson's music is also associated with the killing people and stealing cars, too (since he was also featured on the game's soundtrack).

I don't know if you understand this (or if you have ever played the game in your entire life), but the radio stations in the game, at least up until now, are only heard when you're driving a vehicle or flying a plane. It's just another bit of realism that makes the game a masterpiece.

Anyway, I've said enough. I don't think there's anything to worry about. I guess, you're his former manager or whatever, so you kind of worry about his image and whatnot, but anyone that will avoid listening to his music due to it being in a game like that really has no reason to. They're the ones missing out.

To some of us, that music holds a special place in our lives. I wouldn't want to be crashing into cars to the tune of "Speeding Motorcycle," for example. It's very much akin to the feeling Beatles fans get when The Beatles' music is used on television commercials - instead of tempting us to buy the product, it simply makes us want to horsewhip whoever was responsible for cheapening the music like that.

Then again, I suppose it also depends on what music they use. If it's some of that "Danny And The Nightmares" noise, I probably wouldn't care less how it's used.

I know exactly what you mean, and I really care about his music too. But he's already been covered for a Target commercial. But if that's what HE wants (and it seems like that's the case)...then I guess he's just as responsible as anyone else. So maybe you actually want to horsewhip Daniel.

Well, I think an artist is sometimes the last person who knows what the best thing for their career is, nor do I think a decision necessarily needs to be agreed with just because the artist has made it. For example, I thought the cover concept for "Discovered Covered" was a bad idea, I think "Lost & Found" is a bad idea, and, more than anything else, the failure to come to terms to put out a soundtrack album to "The Devil & Daniel Johnston" was a big opportunity missed. *

No offense to Dick or Daniel intended - those are just things I would have done differently to further his career, even if they are the choices Daniel feels or felt best.

* Did anyone else notice that there IS a "soundtrack available on so-and-so records" credit at the end of the movie? There must have been one in the works at some point.

one of grand theft autos biggest features which is unique to ANY game is the soundtrack.  no other game has the freedom to change stations and discover new music.

as far as I know, GTA still has the option to play whatever you want from your own collection within the vehicles as well.

I don't know what anyone could get worked up over.  If anything, a few more people will find out about DJ and maybe even find this forum and ask questions like a noob.

Hi, How Are You.

All the regulars are featured, including Casper, Sassy Fras, Ratzoid, etc. You are Jeremiah the Innocent Frog. The World wants to turn you into Vile Corrupt! You must remain pure and get through the journey to get to Laurie, who has been hidden somewhere in Suburbia and is guarded by Satan. You have to travel through your Innocence, through Experience and hopefully attain (through Trials and Revelations) Higher Innocence.

Along the way you flirt with Fame; get put into a Mental Hospital and have to Break Out in order to make a record; get to Fly an Airplane safely through a forest; you get to Power Up at Dollar Stores, Record and Comic Book Shops, (but you gotta be careful not to spend too many “Daddy Bucks” you’ve been given for small accomplishments along the way.) Sometimes you have to avoid stuff: Gibby and His Problem. Rabid But Well-Meaning Fans. Nazis.

Of course you have Help. Captain America, Joe Boxer, Frankenstein, Wendy, Lightbulb Man and an army of Happy Ducks are all at your disposal. If you start growing too many eyes and turn Wicked, you can go on a sort of Treasure Hunt gathering items such as Dead Dog Eyeballs, Flyeyes, Cigarettes, Twizzlers, Soda Pop and Cheeseburgers. These items will help restore you and give you ammunition for further battles. If you find your Teeth, you gain Immortality (great for Boxing Matches!)

If you make it through the Hall of Madness, past all the Grievances, Mixed Medications and Self-Sabotage, you get to Play Cards with Satan. (Of course, we all know where that ends, but that’s part of the game. Hint: Don’t let him Deal!!!) If you win, you get turned into Daniel, rescue Laurie from the Library (watch out for a sneak attack from that Damn Librarian! Hint: She’s behind the Psychology Section) and then there’s a big parade with all the characters up to the North Pole to visit Santa. But if you loose, you wind up wiping tables at McDonalds and have to start all over again.
