Ive never really discovered any musician in any way really similiar to DJ.
when i first heard his music it blew my mind because i'd just never heard anything like it before.

-Does anybody know of any musician in any way similiar to DJ
that is any artist who's music has some of these characteristics :
 -quirky and odd lyrics
 -lo-fi recorded
 -high pitched voice
 -experimental with instruments
 -an indepth and intriguing personality
 -a childlike quality to his voice and lyrics
 -a modern day genious
 - suffers from a mental dissorder
 -one man band
 - extremely personal lyrics

Anyone here ever heard of Klaus Beyer? Apparently, he's a "54-year-old mildly retarded German man who is obsessed with the Beatles" who is the subject of a short documentary called "The Other Universe of Klaus Beyer" -- and "toured" the USA with Daniel & Jad Fair in 1999* (?!?)

I've MET Klaus Beyer and I wouldn't say he's any more retarded than you or I...

 

Klaus Beyer and Jad Fair were the two opening acts when Daniel played his legendary Volksbuhne show in Berlin June of 1999. To my knowledge he's never toured the US. In Germany he's known primarily as a filmmaker and I think all of his films (or at least most of them) are either about or inspired by The Beatles.

He also lives with his elderly mother and has an uncanny facial resemblance to Daniel.

You can't really compare anyone with Johnston -- but if you haven't already heard of Jeff Mangum or Neutral Milk Hotel (his band), you'd probably like them.

Lindsay Buckingham (if you count Stevie Nicks as a mental disorder)

Seriously, though, if you like LB/Fleetwood Mac, try to find Craig Ross' "Dead Spy Report" album from a few years back - it has that Buckingham sound circa "Tusk" (I think so, anyhow). Craig, if you were unaware, plays on many of the tracks on the Daniel Johnston albums that Brian Beattie produced.

so you think it's the pain that makes Daniel so great? For me it's his melodies after that comes he's very unique way of deliver his songs. The pain itself is not what comes first to my mind when I think of Daniel's work, it's just as much humour and how he manage to be so direct. But ofcourse, pain is a big part of it but not at all what makes Daniel's music so great.
I somehow have the feeling you only know Daniel from the documentary. It showcases he's life but not so much his art. It's only a small part that is shown there and personally I don't think his best stuff were included eventhough I think the movie itself is great.
