General Discussion / Album Chat / "Please Don't Feed The Ego" date

This is probably of no interest to anyone, but I would be mildly curious myself if anyone knows the real deal with the "Please Don't Feed The Ego" comp CD? It's dated '94 on the sleeve and in the discog, which reads: This CD is a limited reproduction of a 1994 compilation of Daniel Johnston favorites - "Please Don't Feed The Ego - the best of Daniel Johnston #1". The compilation was never produced in mass or distributed on any label. It is reproduced here on Eternal Yip Eye Music. Now that's obviously an incorrect date, as the CD contains tracks from Rejected Unknown (1999) and a version of Bloody Rainbow from a 1999 performance. I suspect this was thrown together in 2003 just prior to its appearance in the rejectedunknown.com store but maybe someone can set me straight on that one??

General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Devil and DJ DVD - extras?

Got the DVD yesterday, the UK release, which I imagine will be the same, in terms of extras, as the release in other countries. No sign of "Daniel's Audio Diaries", which is a real shame as that was the item I was most amped about. The deleted scenes are interesting, Dan's home movies are great, the Laurie & Daniel reunion is sweet & nice to be able to watch (if a little voyeuristic at times - hope they got some time together away from the very close camera), the WFMU session is pretty superfluous, as D. Sulpy says, having been widely circulated, the director's audio commentary will probably remain unheard by me in its entirety, as is every other DVD director's audio commentary I own (does anyone listen to these things?). Overall I'm pretty disappointed, I was really hoping for more from the DVD release, at least a chunk of that great concert footage they edited down for the film. Still, great to have the film on DVD.

General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: cassette tapes to cd's in DJ store

I have no great objection to the design, seems true to the minimalist aesthetic of the tapes. However, I have a major beef with the clumsy, crass mastering of the CDs. Firstly, the CDs have been mastered with 2 second gaps between each tracks, which, needless to say are not on the tapes, & which completely destroy the flow of the music. Listening to the music with gaps is a very jarring, infuriating experience. Secondly, the splits between tracks are real slap-dash, so a note that ends a preceding track will be part of the subsequent track. Which, of course, adds to the jarring listening experience.
Basically, I'd advise people not to touch the reissue CDs with a bargepole. Most of us own CD burners nowadays. Buy all the cassettes from Stress, if you haven't already, and burn them to CD to avoid tape wear, play them in your Discman, whatever. All of us could do a better job of mastering than has been done on these reissues. They've got "wasted opportunity" written right all over them.
Sorry if these words come over as overly harsh but I really feel that the music, for sure, and also the fans who buy it & listen to it do deserve more respect than has been shown here.

Saw the new Roky Erickson doc yesterday. Real good film, very moving account of the guys life & current circumstances. Anyway, Daniel was thanked in the movie credits. I asked the director about this at the q&a which followed the screening, he said that Daniel was interviewed for the film on account of his being a huge Roky fan but that the footage wasn't used as "it didn't make a whole lot of sense". However, he said that Daniel performed a great version of I Walked With A Zombie, which will be included as a DVD extra when that comes out sometime in '06, so that's something to watch out for.
