I have a lot of tab requests, and I imagine others probably do too, so maybe a thread where one can ask for all their Daniel Johnston tabbing needs would be a good thing, no?

If anyone has it, I'm looking for:

Here's what I've got.  I'm working on a guitar tab for Syrup.  It's a little tricky since it's a piano song.

Spirit World Rising

To get the right sound, let the low E string ring in the C chord (0-3-2-0-1-0)

(Instrumental section)
This is just a C chord being slid up 3 frets and then moved down fret by fret back to original position.  One chord per measure.  Let the low E string ring throughout this part.
Here’s the fret tab from low string to high string

0-3-2-0-1-0
0-6-5-0-4-0
0-5-4-0-3-0
0-4-3-0-2-0  (repeat and then end on the last chord)

Mountain Top

Some question as to whether it's Am or A7 in the verse.  I definitely hear Am in the chorus.

Hey M of S,

Just finished the chord chart for "Syrup of Tears"  this should work for piano or guitar.

G/B means G chord in the right hand with a B as the left hand bass note.

Low C bass note on quarter notes throughout this part.  Right hand plays the chords.

I just noticed that the chords in the chorus spell DEAD!  I wonder if he was having a little fun with that...or just coincedence... hmmm.

Can anybody tab out the Bright Eyes version of "Devil Town" for me? I've never heard anything by Daniel Johnston before today, but this sounds like a good song to learn. I just can't tab stuff out myself.. So I would be very thankful if someone could do it for me.

The first “lo-fi” part is played using fingerings for G, C, and D, but either he’s using a capo on the second fret, or the tape is running fast, or he’s just got the guitar tuned a step up.  Whatever the reason, the resulting chords sound A, D, and E

The second “studio’ section is in actual G major.

Em9    0-2-2-0-0-2 work nicely at the end.

His guitar is tuned pretty high on this song (or the tape is running fast) – to play along you’ll either need to tune higher or capo at the first fret.

I also think he’s missing the first string on his guitar. Either that or it’s just being blocked out.  The chords below sound pretty much like the recording, but regular 6-string chords work just fine too.

Whenever he goes to the C chord, he usually plays am Am7 chord for one beat first.  My guess is that it just took him a second to get the last finger down on the C chord.  Whether or not it’s intentional, that little moment of Am7 makes the song for me... so I’ve included it.

Here's tabs for "Lost And Found".  I still have a couple of "huh?"s for some of the lyrics.  Does anyone know if the lyric in Rock This Town is Hollywood "whore" or "horror"?  Both make perfect sense...  I had "whore" at first, but I changed, because "horrors" is a word that shows up in a few songs.

Sometimes things don't line up right when posting tabs.  If it's really bad let me know.  I can also email the MSWord doc to anyone who wants a more printable version.

Bill was my housemate back in the eighties and he's the person who first introduced me to Daniel.  At the time he was playing in a band called Poison 13.  For the past few years his main band has been The Meat Purveyors (on Bloodshot Records) but he tends to have several other projects going. He plays in a band called Cat Scientist and I most recently saw him a week ago playing guitar with Jon Langford of Mekons and Waco Brothers fame. Bill has also toured with Neko Case. A nice guy and a very versatile guitarist so he stays busy.

recording etiquette was pretty amazing and really showed me how talented daniel really was at the time (around '85).  i had gone over to hang out with him in his tiny dorm room that was filled with records, tapes, comic books, and drawings.  i picked up his nylon string guitar and started playing around and daniel picked up this book--some '50s self-help-style book that he got out of a dumpster--and started reading out of it.  after about 10 seconds he turned on his jambox and told me to start over.  i didn't know what the words would be, and he didn't know exactly what i would play, but he followed me perfectly as he read the words straight out of the book, turning them into a song spontaneously.  you can hear him mispronounce the word "contagious" the first time, then get it right the second time.  at the end of song you can hear me laughing in amazement at how perfectly we ended the song.  the whole process of composing and recording took maybe five minutes.    i've been in bands with a lot of talented people, but i've never known anyone with such a grasp of melody.  the guy has trunks full of melodies!

I think it would be cool if these songs were added to the rejected unknown tabs/chords section. It would improve the site and make things more organized. It's all here though, but just a suggestion. It would be nice to have the tabs more accessable, although it might be because I'm lazy (oh yea).

I agree... it's hard to find stuff within the thread.  I sent a bunch in for the "Don't Be Scared" tape a while ago but they were never added - maybe I just need to send them again. 

Syrup of Tears - Songs Of Pain tabs are done - sorry I'm being lazy about getting them up on the board.  Typing it all it in and making everything line up is a tedious process... I'll get them up soon, though...

The last chord of the progression is sometimes G, and sometimes G7.  It’s not really predictable, but the G7 tends to happen during the refrain.

Standard chords work well here.  I’ve also included a drop-D tuning that allows you to get a similar voicing as the piano chords (the D major in particular)

Drop-D variation.  Tune low string down to D.

This song only uses four strings and requires a good deal of retuning.  Comparing to a keyboard or some other instrument makes tuning a bit easier. Use only the four highest strings. 

D string (4th) – tune up to a note between E and F (pretty tight!)
G String (3rd) – tune up to a note between G and G#
B string (2nd) – tune down to a note between G# and A
E string (1st) – tune down to about an A (way down…)

I found the 4 individual plucked notes at the beginning and ending of the song really useful for checking the tuning.  They should correspond to your four detuned open strings.  All the chords are straight bar chords across the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings (sometimes he bars across all four...)

I named the cords after the barred fret. 
So, b2 means X-X-2-2-2-X or X-X-2-2-2-2
b3 means X-X-3-3-3-X or X-X-3-3-3-3
etc…

"R" means rest - in this case an eighth note rest

I'd be curious to hear if anyone tries this out.  This would sound best on a beat up nylon string guitar...

I just banged it out on the piano - these piano chords replicate the guitar part pretty well.

Try playing a single note melody with the  left hand:
Left Hand
Verse:  e - e - f# - e - g - e - g#- a

With the right hand play two-note half-step clusters.  "g/g#" means play g and g# together
Right Hand
Verse: g/g# - g/g# - a/a# - g/g# - a#/b - g/g# - b/c - c/c#

If you play these left and right  hand parts together, it sounds pretty cool... 

For the chorus try these left hand and right hand parts together


RH:  c/c# - c/c#  (rest)  - (rest)  b/c   -    b/c    -    (rest) - (rest)
LH:   a     -  a     -   e     -   e   -   g#   -    g#    -       e   -      e

(repeat 6 times) then...

I've always been confused as to which song is "Polka Dot Rag" on The What of Whom.  There's the song with the lyrics "You are the moon, you are the stars"  and then there's one after it that starts "She said that didn't really love me, not like she loved him" 

The CD-R has both songs on a single track labelled "Polka Dot Rag" and the brief piano track before it as "Excuse Me".  But on the RU website the same "You are the moon" lyrics were submitted for both Excuse Me and Polka Dot Rag.lyrics.

I can't think of any examples of any instumental piano track that were actually titled.  I've always figured that "Excuse Me" was "You are the moon" and Polka Dot Rag was "She said that she didn't really love me" and that the CDR was mis-tracked, but I've never known for sure.  Anyone know for sure?

Which one did you want the tab for?

This song is in the key of B on the recording, but I'm guessing that he played it in C, and that there was a tape speed problem somewhere along the way.  If you want to play along with the recording in B, substitute these chords:
Play B and B7 instead of C and C7
Play E instead of F

Play C#7 instead of D7

The C7 chord after the word “soap” is really just a single note “Bb”, but the full chord works just fine too (or “A” if you’re playing the version in B)

This sounds like the same out of tune guitar used on Sorry Entertainer.  There are a couple of strings tuned to nearly the same pitch.  I came up with two tabs: 

The first one is in the key of the recording, which is bit fast (then again the guitar is completely detuned...). 

The second one is transposed down a half step and allows you to use the open string as the drone note.  Much easier in general.

Hopefully all of this stuff lines up - it looked good on my computer.

Hi all. New Here.

i'm learning to play the autoharp, and as i was doing a exercise in my instruction book, i realised i was doing the chord progression to "Peek-A-Boo."

Nothin' matters. Nothin' does.

This is one of my favorite Daniel Johnston songs, so i was hoping some folks more musical than myself could help me figure out the rest of the chords. The refrain "Please hear my cry for help, and save me from myself" is different from that progression, as is the bridge:

I'm just saying how I feel.
Maybe you could try to understand.
I'm a man who needs you.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Don't worry about whether they're autoharp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoharp) chords; if they're not they'll at least point me in the right direction.

That describes the beautiful woman's face, get it?

One of my favorites by Phil Ochs from his "Greatest Hits" LP (not really a greatest hits - just Ochs poking fun at his own lack of popularity, record sales, and of course, hits).   The cover has Ochs in an Elvis gold lame suit - the back reads "50 Phil Ochs Fans Can't Be Wrong!"  I'm currently obsessed with his music.  If you haven't listened to  him he's definitely worth checking out - especially "Pleasures from the Harbor", "Tape From California", "Rehearsals for Retirement", and "Greatest Hits"

Jad and Daniel changed the chord progression and also a few lyrics (as expected).  I threw the chords to the original Phil Ochs version just for fun)

Thanks again. I didn't even know that was a cover.

All I know about Phil Ochs is that on the day he and Marvin Gay got married, the trees all waved their giant arms and happiness bled from every street corner and biplanes bombed with fluffy pillows.

Actually that's just a song by They Might Be Giants.....but its the only other time I've heard his name.


I would request another song, but I feel guilty - like I should be paying you or something.

Isn't it "a virgin afraid of being laid", as opposed to "birds that are afraid of being late?"

Or is that just my mind being in the gutter?

I just spent the last couple hours building the Daniel Johnston page using the tabs from this thread. I'm going alphabetically, and when I'm done with the songs in this thread I'll input the ones from the R/U site. I need to get some sleep, but I managed to make it through the "f" section:

Cool!  Thanks so much for doing this HMBT.  I'll post tabs in both places in the future.  I've got a bunch more tabs that i just haven't had the time to put up.  I'll try to get some of them up in the next few weeks.  I've been on a Lost Recordings kick lately... love those songs.

oh i agree completely.  daniel's versions are always better than the covers in my opinion.  but the songs deserve to be covered and need to be covered.  daniel will make a lot more money that way, and it spreads his music more widely.

Hi all! I have 2 l'il guys at home who want to perform "Casper the Friendly Ghost" from Yip/Jump for their 3rd grade talent show. One is singing and the other is playing the piano. Missy, you are more than welcome.

This site holds a wealth of information. On this thread alone zack26 has posted more songs than I can keep up with – the dude is a machine (LOL). In-fact if you want a better idea of the lyrics and chords, you can also search up at the top – or go through the thread and find the info on just about any song you’re looking for.

I think it’s great about the talent show. If they are putting forth the effort to perform this number im sure they’re going to knock the audiences socks off!

I know it's months after your Casper request but I was playing it on the piano tonight and I think the part you are missing is the part in between verses.  It sounds good to me as pounding the single bass note on your left hand on 1,2,3 and 4 through the whole song. The part than goes dun-dun-dun-DUN.

Someone should try and figure out the chords for don't play cards with satan cosit isn't anywhere on the internet and it's such a great song and one of Daniels more famous ones.I will be  eternally thankful!!

Seriously, just FYI, the riff you mention may well have been played by Bill A. (most recently a member of the Meat Purveyors) but the band Texas Instruments as a whole also played on that track, which was one of the notorious demos produced by Kim Fowley (see Modern Lovers; Runaways, etc.). You probably noticed the rather prominent sample from The Runaways' "Cherry Bomb" repeated towards the end of the track!

As I recall, the guys in TI nearly strangeld Dan for insisting on that weird change at the "Hey, Elvis" part -- Bill A. can probably tell ya more about the track if he still pops in here these days...

Ok i'll give Fake Records of Rock 'n Roll a try. For the instrumental part do all barre chords and make them seventh chords if you want. it sounds good that way, but changing the C, C#, D to sevenths is kinda tricky, at least for me.

I contributed a bunch of chords and tabs in the past but with a new baby I just haven't had the time.  I agree with Jeff - it needs to come back to life. I'm sure many are still watching the message board, but few are posting. I believe March had only 1 post!  I'll try to get some new chord charts in the future.  If there are any requests for chords I'd be happy to try and post them soon.

I took a little break from DJ - now I'm just beginning to listen again.  It's been refreshing.  Been really enjoying the later albums recently - Rejected Unknown and Lost and Found in particular.

In the meantime, here's a minor contribution from me. I took the detailed notes on "Walking the Cow" by zack26 and turned it into bonafide sheet music. You can download it here:

I did my best to follow zack's instructions, but I have to admit to having a tin ear, so there may still be some minor mistake in there. I would welcome corrections. (The sheet music was created using a program called GNU LilyPond, so it's generally very easy to make changes.)
