Post by: jean astro on September 23, 2003, 02:39:18 AM
it might be a lame question, but..
whats your favourite song of daniel johnston??
if you could only save one what would it be?

i'd pick 'grievances', it kills me

or favourite darling girl. or maybe Nothing , on why me?

 :? hard to answer

This one itīs very difficult...He has so many classics Like "Walking the Cow", "Casper the Friendly Ghost", "Speeding Motorcycle".
Also, his new stuff is amazing, like "Forever", "Dream Scream".....

But would agree and pick "Griviences".....Itīs the songs of songs.....an overview of most elements on Danielīs  imaginary and themes.....

Itīs the song that has everything built in.......I really would like to know if it was the first song he wrote (the first of the recorded ones).

I would have to say that for me it is a three way tie between

"syrup of tears"
"hate song"
and
"phantom of my own opera"

'I'm a Song' from The Lost Recordings 1, or 'Everlasting Love' from 'Why Me?'

What about "Some things last a long time" from "1990"?

A very simple song but one, that has always struck me deeply.

I'd go for "Peek-a-boo" from "The What of Whom". It stops me dead in the tracks each time I listen to it.

I'd say "why, without you" from The What of Whom

Loner is a great one...and I'm a Song is really great.  I'm glad someone else thinks so.  :)

But I can't pick just one.

It's a truely impossible answer.....so let's not go there ok?  Pretty much all of Dan's 80's and early 90's stuff is genius....say no more. RAWR!!!

I've heard Daniel answer the question as to which is his favorite or "best" song and he answers "Greivances" without a second thought.

Interesting...

To finally jump in here, I have to say that I automatically think it's Grievances, but in truth, nothing beats "An Idiot's End". Grievances may be more personal or essential or whatever, but the word-work and imagery in An Idiot's End is pure world-grade songwriter at peak performance level. A knockout.

I'd have to say 'Big business monkey' 'I remember painfully' 'come to me tonite' 'hey joe' and 'I saw her standing there' is brilliant!!
I guess every day it changes.........I had to go against the grain against 'grievances' even though its an awesome song.

I saw her standing there is a beatles song that daniel has covered.

I'd say the one that sticks with me the most is Like a Monkey in a Zoo.

I think Like a Monkey In A Zoo is one of the most "structured" of Daniel's songs lyrically - I don't know that he was trying to be structured, but it turned out that way.   For that reason, though, it does "stand out".

Being that way, it is the kind of song that someone else can take on and get across easily, and that appeals to the general listener.

I agree with notdaniel. An idiot's end is just plain one of the best songs I've ever heard, by anyone - have played it to a lot of people, just to see their jaws drop and the light come on in their minds if they 'get it'  8-)

(but then there are so many other good ones too ..)

How about "More Dead Than Alive"? I think this one compares favorably with anything on Dylan's Blonde on Blonde.

Currently, "Living Life" resonates most with me.  I like both Dan's fast version and the slower tempo cover by Eels.

...but, my favorite DJ song might/will probably change as my life changes...

livin, livin, livin, livin life....

"Nothing" off the Live in Berlin cd! Man that song is beautiful!

Title: Re: daniel's best song ever

Dude-
That Live In Berlin CD is HAUNTING! Like it was recorded in dreamtime, etched with ice on the slate inside your skull and played by slowly turning around counter-clockwise on a felt-wrapped piano with your eyes closed tight.

(Huh?)

Best song is like best painting at the Louvre, you know?
"Hi How Are You?" the tape, was the dose that got me infected, and each song on there like a slow steady morphine drip. That tape was the soundtrack to one of the most manic, frantic, painful, depressing, beautiful years of my life, so I will always be partial.

Someday, following a Daniel binge, I will make a personal top 10 and post, but I may never be the same again.

Couldn't pick one until I have heard all of them but as of right now I'm leaning towards Broken Dreams and that is just based on the snippet I heard on the movie site.

"When We All Become Famous in the Sky" has been going around the turntable in my head of late.

How prophetic, kinda/sorta, w/o the "sky" part I mean, y'know...

After reading this, I just had to google 'marquis' and 'sky', because I thought I had heard the phrase 'the big marquis in the sky' before...but, I coudn't find that phrase...got this instead:

16th Floor Sky Lounge ... New York Marriott Marquis

Wonder if Dan's been there ;-)

PS: Henry - I will cash your gift contribution check, as soon as I come across it! I got married on 12/27, and
any non-urgent paperwork got pushed aside...as in, it's probably in my old apt, which I still need to move most of my stuff from...sorry to take so long!

Oh...I MUST vote for "Go" ...it's so beautiful...and especially so because Dan is encouraging others to fiind what has escaped him, thus far.

Livin Life is a close contender, for me.

sorry, I'm a bit late. I think Daniel's best songs are "Tuna Ketchup" and "Peek A Boo".

I'm glad somebody said "Tuna Ketchup" I love that one too. But I don't have a favorite...I have a favorite album but not a favorite song. It's impossible, but songs that would be up there are:

Worried Shoes
Chord Organ Blues
Grievances
Like A Monkey In a Zoo
Pot Head
Danny Don't Rapp (I LOVE IT, incredible)
God
I Remember Painfully
King Kong (that song probably did it for me, I knew I was a Dan Johnston fan after hearing it)
Speeding Motorcycle
The Beatles
Casper The Friendly Ghost
A Little Story
Lazy
Story of An Artist

This list can go on for pages...so I'll quit since you get the point. I think my favorite album so far is Songs of Pain. It is slightly better than Yip/Jump Music in my opinion...and when I say slightly I mean SLIGHTLY. I still need to hear a lot of albums in their entirety, including More Songs of Pain.

 :-D
