Title: Beam Me Up!
Post by: D. Sulpy on April 24, 2010, 07:15:13 AM
New live album from DJ and BEAM. Available on CD from Germany here:

http://www.amazon.de/Beam-Me-Up-Daniel-Johnston/dp/B003AJEB9Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1272114505&sr=8-1 (http://www.amazon.de/Beam-Me-Up-Daniel-Johnston/dp/B003AJEB9Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1272114505&sr=8-1)

1. Sarah Drove Around In Her Car (short spoken thing)
2. Syrup Of Tears
3. Must
4. True Love
5. Wicked World
6. Mask
7. Try To Love
8. Devil Town
9. Love Enchanted
10. Walking The Cow
11. Last Song
12. The Beatles

I don't have the album yet (it's in the mail), but from what I can hear from the Amazon samples I'm not impressed. No one seems to be in key, and no one's playing in time. Some might perceive "art" in this... I think it's just amateurish. Of course, I might very well change my opinion once I hear the whole thing.

My money would be on you not changing your mind.

Have you ever heard the saying "throw a bunch of sh*t against the wall and see what sticks"?  I think that's what we're currently experiencing.

Perhaps this next release will be more to everyone's liking:

Yeah, I listened to it all. Not my cup of tea. In fact, it was rough getting through it, in parts. It's not terrible, just different.

Of course the same has been said, at the time, for all kinds of artists experimenting or collaborating, and now said projects are seen (by some) as masterpieces. Think "Metal Machine Music" by Lou Reed, "Trans" by Neil Young, etc.

Who knows? In the end, it's always good to see an artist trying on different things.

I'd still like to see Daniel pair up with a number of other musicians (Jad Fair, Eels, Paleface, Weird Paul, etc.) and do an original "Children's Record." THAT would be fun.

Wow...

If WE don't like it, makes me wonder who DOES...???

The Stress Set looks fantastic (of course, it would have looked even more fantastic before I spent the money on "The Early Recordings Volume 1" double CD).

Please post the link here when it's available.  :-D

The above title is more appropriately referred to as "Worried Shoes II" -- or at least it contains most of the lyrics to WS2. In its original 1986 incarnation with the Rhythm Rats backing up Dan, it is easily one of my very favorite Daniel Johnston recordings -- even though objectively I would have to admit that the "standard" lyrics to "Worried Shoes" are in fact superior.

As such, it's an extra-sad shame that this cut is so uninteresting. Well, we can all continue to keep those fingers crossed for the eventual release of the DanJ/RRats long-ago completed December Blues album, which is already around 2 years late... AH, WELL!!!

BTW: It maybe was just my computer, but I found this to be a dead link:

(It works now when I click it off my own follow-up, though... how strange!)

But are the recordings contained in the box set that Inigo is releasing from the "originals", or from the cdr versions?...from my understanding , it was the latter.
I'll find out soon enough, I spose.

Ghostjr - I endorse this release. You can take from that whatever you'd like.  Or you could ask Inigo.

Could you be any more distasteful?  Wow.

Didn't mean to offend -- it was one of those "hit-send-without-thinking" moments.

I've removed the comment from my post, but I can't excise the quote from yours,
so that's up to you.

Wow. Indeed. Now having received it, I think even less of it. I keep wondering if Daniel even recorded his vocals at the same time as that cacaphony of non-talent known as BEAM (at least the Portsmouth Sinfonia had a sense of fun about their playing... these guys just... well, don't).

I'd review it further, but that means I would have to listen to it.  :|
