Title: The next album?
Post by: Paul is walking the cow on February 15, 2010, 07:03:14 PM
Wondering if there are any plans for any new releases, compilations, live performances etc?
Is Daniel planning on making another album?

Well, the last album came out last year...
and the one before that, 6 years ago(not counting Lost & Found cuz it was a compilation of old songs), so, maybe the next will be out in 2015?

I'm fairly sure you will se something "new" before then.

Is Lost and Found really a collection of old songs? I thought that apart from "The Beatles", it was the first time that recordings of these compositions had been released.

If you go on releases, in the 00's Daniel released several original solo records, Rejected Unknown (2001), Fear Yourself (2003), Lost and Found (2006) and Is and Always Was (2009). That is more than an album every 3 years, and does not include the archive based release White Magic (2004) or the DVD we put together 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston - Live at the Union Chapel' (2008), or any of the other releases I might have missed, or Daniel's work with other folk under various band names and collaborative associations.

As I recall Lost and Found consists of recordings from the Rejected Unknown sessions.

We all know that with Daniel, there's always 5 or 6 "completed albums in the can." So, if he wanted to, I'm sure there could be a new release every year or so. Not to mention the Danny and the Nightmares material, which is always interesting.

The way I look at it, there's so much Daniel out there, live recordings, lost tapes, alternative tapes, mp3's, etc., it would take a long time to get "everything," and even then, you know it wouldn't be everything!

But it is still a new record. McCartney's 'Memory Almost Full' was mostly recorded before the preceding album ('Chaos and Creation in the Backyard'). The Rolling Stone's 'Tatoo You' was mostly dubbed and salvaged masters from the previous decade.

If you are talking in terms of original studio recorded releases that get to market, and when the next one is going to hit the shelves, then at the minute, the waiting time is about 2.5 years between records. If you include compilations and all other releases, as the original poster enquired, then it is better than that.

Thanks Henry.

There's a bunch of stuff all around that hasn't been heard.

I remember him saying that there is a new album coming out next year called "The Death Of Satan." I think it's Danny and the Nightmares.

This is true. And Brian Beattie (producer) has said that there's still probably enough good material to cull a THIRD album from the sessions as well, if the need arises.

I have no idea what keeps stalling the release of "December Blues", but half of it consists of old recordings from 1986 with enough new material recorded in 2008 to fill it out into a complete album.

PS: I hope everybody already got their full share of enjoyment from the unreleased recordings I posted on IMEEM... since f*cking Myspace apparently bought out the site and wiped out everything I had on there!

I did, notdan!

... and many thanks for sharing. All together, there was almost an album's worth of material there.
