PICTURES OF THE MURAL
SUMMARY OF EVENTS: Daniel Johnston painted a MURAL of the "Hi How Are You" frog on the side of the SOUND EXCHANGE music store on Guadalupe Blvd in Austin Texas, at 21st street. For over a decade the mural has been maintained and preserved out of love and respect for Daniel Johnston and his work.
Early the week of January 5th people knowledgeable about the significance of the mural noticed construction crews at the site preparing to convert the site into a Baja Fresh franchise. The MURAL was in DANGER of being destroyed.
Fans rallied at the site Tuesday, January 6th, picketing and calling out local news agency - to story made the evening news that day and the next (see above), the Austin papers (see below), Rolling Stone magazine and AP Press.
As quickly as the afternoon of Wednesday
January 7th, the owner John Oudt had a press
announcement saying he would re-design the restaurant and preserve the
mural. HURRAY! And THANKS to all of you who spoke up!!
If you haven't contacted Baja Fresh yet, PLEASE GO AHEAD and email or call - and THANK THEM for saving the "Hi How Are You" mural!!! I don't know how to contact the owner.
UPDATE: According to Craig Koon, the painting was NOT done in 1983 (the year of the album) as previously reported. Craig sponsored the mural painting in 1993 and said that the previous landlord was supposed to convey the importance of the mural to the next owner, but somehow that didn't happen. John Oudt said that if he had understood about the mural, he would have never planned to tear it down.
