Daniel Johnston PRESS FAQ page:   (updated January 8, 2008)

When is Daniel's next album? The album "Lost and Found" (previously released in the U.K. only in 2004) will be released in North America in early 2008.

Recorded in 2003 and produced by Brian Beatty, the album's release in the U.S. was delayed by the release of the movie and the 2006 release of "Welcome To My World" - a "best of" album targeted to new listeners.

As with all his albums, the releases are on Daniel's private label Eternal Yip Eye Music and distributed by Fontana.

Daniel has several completed works and older works which will be released over the next few years.   The next MAJOR work from Daniel will be existing new material produced in collaboration with several major producers and artists.   Release is expected in early 2009.

A vinyl release of the albums "Hi How Are You / Continued Story" and of "Yip Jump Music" was made in November 2007.

A re-release of the successful album "Discovered Covered - The Late Great Daniel Johnston" was made by Daniel on his Eternal Yip Eye Music label in November 2007.

For complete album history, see the DISCOGRAPHY link on www.rejectedunknown.com.
What is Daniel doing these days? Daniel turns 47 this January 2008.

The 47 year old moved out of his parents house in January 2006.   His father built a house next door (now aged 86 and 87 years old) for Daniel from funds saved from income since his father took over management of Daniel's career over ten years.

Their homes are in the small, layed-back town of Waller, Texas, where his parents have lived since 1993 after moving from the home in West Virginia to be close to their other four children and ten grandchildren in Texas.

Daniel occupies himself with collecting and watching old movies, has a room dedicated to drawing and painting his art, and his garage set up as a studio with a piano and where he sometimes practices with his good friends and band members of Danny and The Nightmares.

What are Daniel's tour plans? Daniel had renewed touring activity in 2007, and some tour dates have been set in 2008.  His brother arranges touring opportunities.

For a current list of TOUR DATES see www.rejectedunknown.com/tour/tour.htm

Beginning with the April tour in The Netherlands and Belgium, Daniel's shows utilize local bands to back him up for about half of the show.   The local bands support Daniel in singing many of the older and popular songs that Daniel wouldn't otherwise be singing.

Beginning with the New York shows in May, Daniel's long-time friend Brett Hartenbach has been also joining Daniel on the road.  Brett played with Daniel from some of the earliest recording years (1979) and today is an accomplished professional musician.  His ecclectic and skillful guitar is producing some great music-making with Daniel, and Daniel seems to be able to let his hair down a little when performing with his old friend.

The format on the shows for July through September will continue to include Daniel playing solo (guitar and sometimes piano sets), with his friend Brett Hartenbach, and with a local backing band.  This format has consistently produced high energy and rewarding shows.

Currently we are reviewing more U.S. and European tours in the spring of 2008.
What about Daniel's art these days? You can see Daniel's prolific album-producing history of the past 26 years under discography link at www.rejectedunknown.com.

Daniel's art came to it's own when 28 of his pieces were included in the 2006 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of Art.

Daniel continues to draw prolificly at his home in Waller, Texas.   His art exhibits around the work (see EXHIBIT DATES and EXHIBIT HISTORY links on www.rejectedunknown.com ), and sells on the web stores at his official site www.hihowareyou.com and fan site www.rejectedunknown.com.  Both those sites are run by Daniel's family, and sales benefit Daniel directly.

Is Daniel still writing songs? Daniel continues to crank out new songs, and some of them are almost always part of his solo act in current tours.   He has several albums in queue for release (Lost and Found finally to see a U.S. release in October 2007) and several others in the making.

His favorite "Mean Girls Give Pleasure" is an interesting and catchy song, but it's meaning evades listeners.   Asked to explain, Daniel touted that he understands it, and that's all that matters.   But he has in fact explained it.   When three attractive girls joined him on Texas gigs accompanying his group Danny and The Nightmares as a string trio, he complained that they don't let him kiss them on the lips.   So he calls them 'mean girls'.  But he loves to be around them and bask in their beauty.   Hence the song, "Mean Girls Give Pleasure."

Daniel has a long inventory of newer songs, most of which will probably never reach the public ears.  But from these he selects ones to record and perhaps collaborate with in production for future albums.
Who is the guitarist that plays with Daniel on tour? The guitarist is Daniel's friend from some of his earliest song-writing days, Brett Hartenbach.

Brett Hartenbach has been a working musician for nearly 30 years, playing and singing in concert halls, clubs, colleges and festivals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the U.S. and abroad, including NYC's legendary Bottom Line, the Newport Folk Festival, the Edmonton Folk Festival, the Boston Folk Festival, the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Mountain Stage, Woodsongs, the Sanders Theater (Cambridge, MA), the Old Town School of Music (Chicago), Cambridge's famed Club Passim and Breminale in Bremen, Germany. He has also shared the stage with such notables as Ellis Paul, Mary Lou Lord, Taj Mahal, Tom Rush, Susan Werner, Garnet Rodgers, Greg Brown, Robert Earl Keen, Josh Ritter, Bill Lloyd of Foster and Lloyd and R.E.M. producer Don Dixon. Northeast Performer magazine referred to Hartenbach as a "human fake book" because of his vast knowledge of, and ability to play material from various genres, as well as the number of songs he can perform at a moment's notice.

Throughout the course of his career, Brett has worked in various duos and groups, as well as a solo performer. As an accompanist, he has been called a "singer's dream." In recent years he has traveled extensively throughout the U.S, Canada and Europe performing and collaborating with Boston-based singer-songwriter Rachael Davis and cult icon Daniel Johnston. Brett co-wrote Davis's "Eighth Lit Window," which earned her a spot as a finalist in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubadour Contest, which she went on to win. He also has brought his skills as an arranger to her music.

With a style that is both tasteful, powerful and versatile, yet always in the service of the song, Brett's guitar can be heard on various recordings ranging from Johnston and Davis to the pop-folk of singer-songwriter T.S. Baker, the traditional gospel of the Rock My Soul choir and chromatic harpist Ben Brown, to name a few. Whether creating trademark hooks, adding the musical backdrop to a writer's melody and lyric, playing lead guitar or simply holding down a steady rhythm, he has a way of bringing out the best in a singer and their song.

Brett has produced or co-produced recordings by Daniel Johnston (The EP "Laurie" [U.K. Top Ten] was Melody Maker's "Single of the Week"), champion of the chromatic harp Ben Brown, Michigan-based singer-songwriter Kevin Henry, Rock My Soul, Rock My Soul soloist Dawn Boyer and singer-songwriter Richard Gsottschneider. He is currently working on his first solo recording.

Quotes: "Brett is an immensely talented and tasteful guitarist who plays with emotion and restraint -- a rare combination these days...he complements and completes the song without ever getting in the way."-Robbie Schaefer (Eddie from Ohio)
"...plays with both fire and taste."-Ellis Paul (Philo/Rounder recording artist)
"A unique sound that encompasses the essence of both folk and rock."-- The Channels (Santa Barbara [CA] Community College)
"Great guitarwork."-Robert Crenshaw (singer-songwriter and drummer with Marshall Crenshaw)
"It was like he was one with the guitar."-Jim Lauderdale (Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter)
