I watched the trailer for the devil and daniel johnston which made me want to download one of his songs, so i downloaded "walking the cow".  omg the first time i listened to it i fell in love with it.  for some reason it brings a tear to my eye, his voice, his delivery, his lyrics what he does with the keyboard even though its just him. I love that you can hear his fingers hitting the keys as he plays as the recording is so cheap.

I plan on buying one of his albums asap.  since listening to walking the cow i have been looking up daniels art work, and reading about him and am really looking forward to the devil and daniel johnston, I have grown a great couriosity on his life from just listening to this one song, i heard he had a mental condition which caused him to be extremley depressed, which again, drove me to want to know more about this man.

I can see me really getting into daniels stuff.

Just thought id post here and express my initial feelings on daniel and his work.

thanks,

Luke.

well, this is the kind of response I had when I first heard a daniel song. I think it was worried shoes or speeding motorcycle. If you get some of the songs from back then, the amazing melodies, lyrics with another perspective etc, if you get this you just have to know more and more and then you start understanding the story about the girl laurie after a couple of songs and it becomes ever more interesting, especially if you can relate.

"Walking the Cow".. what a great first song to hear!

Mine was "Party" which I liked a lot when I first heard it... but the first one that REALLY got me hooked was "Pothead".

I heard my first Daniel song in 1978 I think. We were in Daniels basement and he played it for me. It was Rejected I believe. I know I helped him change the bridge.

Luke,
May I suggest that you begin with early stuff such as Yip Jump or the equivelent. You need o hear the formative years first.

If you want to "HEAR" what went on in Daniels mind then I suggest 1990. I have to be honest with you. You have to have a strong stomach for that one. I have listened to it once and I have never been able to listen to it again.

Best wishes,
Fritz

Well,
I just got off the phone with Daniel and we were talking about the early times. I have to get a hold of another friend of ours who actually played on one of Daniels early releases. I think he has some cassettes and cd's that I've not seen.  Quite frankly there is alot of music out there that I am not aware of.

I have Daniels first cassete somewhere and with the marriage and divorce and all of the moving I am still trying to locate some of his very first stuff he did back in the late 70's. I think my parents have a few boxes of mine around and I need to go thru it.

Henry, I became a mod all of a sudden so hello and I hope to get to know you better.

"...I became a mod all of a sudden..." I like that line. Like something out of Quadrophenia or something...

Anyway, yeah. I saw your collection of Dan's art on www.rejectedunknown.com and put it together. Those early recording sound quite interesting...like maybe stuff prior to the Stress tapes? Hmmmm....

Divorce? Yeah, know bout that kinda thing. Need to vent/chat/whatever, drop me a line.

Looking forward to your insights...

You bet Henry. But the divorce happend in 1994 and I have been very happily remarried since 1998. And also back in Daniels world since 2002. You have no idea how happy I am to be back with him now. I am also very pleased to be here helping out as much as I can.

You couldn't take 1990? That's one of my favorites.

I think once you've heard "Songs of Pain", you're ready for any Daniel Johnston.

I never heard of Daniel Johnston until a couple days ago. I saw the trailer for the movie on Quicktime & was immediately intrigued. The music was haunting. I "googled" Daniel J & was surprised at the vast amounts of information regarding this man. I am a visual artist myself & loved his use of magic marker as medium. I bought the 2 disc compilation of covers & originals off Itunes & the first song I heard was "Story Of An Artist". Unbelievable! I loved it & I love King Kong, Go, Grievance, Devil Town, True Love & Sorry Entertainer.

I can't sit here & write something witty or philosophical on why Daniel's Music deserves to be recognized. All I know is I feel his music in my soul & I do not need to explain it. That is valid enough reason for me.

Like Bob Marley sang "Who Feels It, Knows It".
