I am a Baby (In My Universe) would be good, I don't play piano though and it seems tricky to do on guitar, maybe I'm just not getting it.  oh well thanks

This sounds like the same out of tune guitar used on Sorry Entertainer.  There are a couple of strings tuned to nearly the same pitch.  I came up with two tabs:

The first one is in the key of the recording, which is bit fast (then again the guitar is completely detuned...).

The second one is transposed down a half step and allows you to use the open string as the drone note.  Much easier in general.

Hopefully all of this stuff lines up - it looked good on my computer.

I Am a Baby in My Universe
from Hi, How Are You?

e |--------------------------|
b |-7--7--6--6--9--9--8--8--|
g |--------------------------|
d |-6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--|

I am a baby in my universe
Iíll live forever
I am a baby in my universe

g |--7--7--7--7--6--6--6--6--5--5--5--5--4--4--4--4--|
d |----------------------------------------------------|
a |----------------------------------------------------|
E |----------------------------------------------------|

(repeat. Second time repeat the last chord on ďforeverĒ)

Oooo, Iím only 22
Iíll live forever
Oooo, Iím only 22
Iíll live forever
Forever

I am a baby in my universe
I am a baby in my universe
Iíll live forever

Oooo, Iím only 22

Oooo, Iím only 22
Iíll live forever
Forever, forever

Ooo, ooo, ooo

Hi all. New Here.

i'm learning to play the autoharp, and as i was doing a exercise in my instruction book, i realised i was doing the chord progression to "Peek-A-Boo."

F              Dmin
When I'm down, really down,
Bb               C7
Nothin' matters. Nothin' does.

This is one of my favorite Daniel Johnston songs, so i was hoping some folks more musical than myself could help me figure out the rest of the chords. The refrain "Please hear my cry for help, and save me from myself" is different from that progression, as is the bridge:

I'm just saying how I feel.
Maybe you could try to understand.
I'm a man who needs you.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Don't worry about whether they're autoharp chords; if they're not they'll at least point me in the right direction.

Peek-a-boo

Intro (and after every chorus):  G    Emin

G                   Emin
When Iím down, really down
C                      D          D7
Nothing matters, nothing does
G                     Emin
I close my eyes and go to sleep
C                    D              D7
But I canít sleep, I canít sleep

G                   C          G
Please hear my cry for help
                    D          G
And save me from myself

Junior high, I lost my mind
I donít know why, itís a terrible thing
Since that day itís been a struggle
Trying to make sense out of scrambled eggs

Please hear my cry for help
And save me from myself

I painted a bar and I never got paid
In a town where everyone was unemployed
I was locked in on Easter Day
All I had to eat was a piece of bread
When I got home my mother said,
ďYouíre a lazy bum and thatís how come
You suffer like that, and youíll starve
All your life, all your lifeĒ
Spoken just like it was a curse
But it didnít really sound so bad
I like to make things up
Itís the healthiest thing that I do
But Iím tired from being kidnapped
By a dark wolf that would do me in

Please hear my cry for help
And save me from myself

C            D                G
Iím just saying how I feel
C          D           G          C
Maybe you could try to understand
         G             C      G
Iím a man who needs you

(G   Emin  like intro)

When Iím down, really down
Nothing matters, nothing does
I close my eyes and go to sleep
But I canít sleep, I canít sleep
You can listen to these songs
Have a good time and walk away
But for me itís not that easy
I have to live these songs forever

Please hear my cry for help
And save me from myself

Anyone have the chords to "Unpack Your Adjectives"?

Thank you!  grin

Unpack Your Adjectives

Eb                     Ab                  Bb
Got home from camping last spring.
Eb                 Ab              Bb
Saw people, places and things.
Eb               Ab
We barely had arrived,
Db                     Gb
Friends asked us to describe
B                                                    Bb
The people, places and every last thing.

                                          Eb     Ab   Bb
So we unpacked our adjectives.

I unpacked "frustrating" first.
Reached in and found the word "worst".
Then I picked "soggy" and
Next I picked "foggy" and
Then I was ready to tell them my tale.

'Cause I'd unpacked my adjectives.

Bb  A  Ab   G

F#7      G7  (four times)
Adjectives are words you use to really describe things,
Handy words to carry around.
Ab7     A7 (four times)
Days are sunny or they're rainy
Boys are dumb or else they're brainy
Adjectives can show you which way.
Bb7   B7  (four times)
Adjectives are often used to help us compare things,
To say how thin, how fat, how short, how tall.
C7   Db7  (four times)
Girls who are tall can get taller,
Boys who are small can get smaller,
Till one is the tallest
And the other's the smallest of all.

We hiked along without care.
Then we ran into a bear.
He was a hairy bear,
He was a scary bear,
We beat a hasty retreat from his lair.

And described him with adjectives.

[spoken]That was one big, ugly bear!

[spoken] You can even make adjectives out of the other parts of speech, like verbs or nouns. All you have to do is tack on an ending like "-ic" or "-ish" or "-ary". For example, this girl can grow up to be a beautiful woman Ė but still have a girlish face. "Girl" is a noun, but the ending "-ish" makes it an adjective - girlish. That describes the beautiful woman's face, get it?

Next time you go on a trip,
Remember this little tip:
The minute you get back,
They'll ask you this and that,
You can describe people, places and things...

Simply unpack your adjectives.
You can do it with adjectives.
Tell them 'bout it with adjectives.
You can shout it with adjectives.

The lyrics to 'Nothing' and the chords, so I can maybe learn it on piano?
It's fast becomig my favourite song of Daniel's, it's an extremely layered piece.

Cheers.

I'm not sure I got all of the lyrics right... feel free to submit any corrections

Nothing
from Why Me?

G                                D
Not that you want to be out of curiosity
Em                             C
Just a corsage of the world
G                           Am
I was in love with a girl
C                                  D            D7
I would the violence foresee

(G  D  Em  C  G  Am  C  D  D7 is the same for every verse)

All that it ought to be
Blessed by generosity
Sure do put your heart in a whirl
Stop to pick up a dollar bill
As the blood drips at the mill

Have you got fried chicken?
You ate it up so fast
Layed down his life just for you
Now you have nothing to do
Just a television tube

Though for goodness sake
And the love you make
Skipping stones at the lake
Youíve got a half-baked idea
To think weíd be so glad to see ya

Lost in your lonely room
How they grow up and bloom
Young girls in the magazine
How they took part in your doom
Babies step out of the womb

Hunger and lust for life
She was like any housewife
Darning the socks with concern
Glad you ever were born
Just to get up in the morn

Though all the while you were
Surrounded by amateurs
Crazier than love shows insane
Thinking your hope was refrained
And the emotional pain

Nothing to do but cry
As you dry your eyes
Watching the soap opera die
Longing for the freedom of success
When weíre all just a temporary guest

Living in such a mess
Iíll bring you back again
Just like you used to have been
How could really win
Punching your existence to sin

Weíll drive in the twilight
You think will make it right
Thereís nothing left but nothing
But an empty song
Why did it have to go wrong?

How it all works out
Something about it so
Thinking that love is a crime
You were a friend of mine
Standing there at missed time

Youíre gonna make it Joe
Love is sure to follow
Happy to be that way
Tomorrow is a brand new day
What do you have to say?

Nothing

Top stuff mate, although I always heard this lyric:

Lay down a slice just for you

as

Layed down it's life just for you

Cheers!

Wow this thread has gotten huge!

Zack, how about true grief or come back (from it's spooky).

I love Come Back, and it seems simple enough, but everything on that album is so out of tune.

Wow this thread has gotten huge!

Zack, how about true grief or come back (from it's spooky).

I love Come Back, and it seems simple enough, but everything on that album is so out of tune.

Come Back
from It's Spooky

The guitar on Come Back is tuned down roughly a whole step (D-G-C-F-A-D) and is then played using these chords.

C   X-3-2-0-1-0   (sounds as Bb)
F/A   X-0-3-2-1-1   (sounds as Eb/G)
A   X-0-2-2-X-X  (sounds as G)

These are the chords I put in the tab.  If you donít want to retune you can play it with a capo on the 3rd fret using these chords instead (fret numbers are counted from the capo).  It will sound pretty much the same.

G   3-2-0-0-0-X    (sounds as Bb)
C/E   0-3-2-0-1-0   (sounds as Eb/G)
E   0-2-2-X-X-X  (sounds as G)

Come Back

C
I took a wrong turn of events
                F/A                             C
I made a wrong fork at the situation
               C
I took a wrong turn of events
                 F/A
I made a wrong fork at the situation

C
Iíve been talking to you in your absence
                  F/A
And Iíve fabricated quite a turn of events
  C
I always knew it would come to this
   F/A
I always knew it would come to this

A
Come back, come back into his hands
His every wish is your command
Come back, come back into Satanís arms
I wonít shield you from the evil
And I love all your songs

(as before  C   F/A   C   F/A)
Iíve been talking to you in my absence
And your narrow path has made sense of it all
I always knew it would come to this
I always knew it would come to this

A
I make up what I believe
I donít believe what you believe
Come back, come back to Austin, Texas
Satan wants you and he loves all your songs

(as before   C    F/A   C   F/A)
You reach through 200 miles of your own music noise
So dear and so quiet
Like bells across water
Like lying in the darkness

A
Come back, come back into his hands
His every wish is your command
Come back, come back into Satanís arms
I canít shield you from evil
But I love all your songs

Oh Danny Boy, the old serpentís calling

how about true grief

True Grief

Daniel usually throws in bass note runs connecting the chords in the verses:

C   (bass:  C-C-D-D#)   E7   (bass:  E-E-D-C)   Am      D7  (bass:  D-Db)

C                 E7
Once upon a stage
Am                   D7
An evening of praise
C                                  E7
the public has come to see
Am               D7
the saddest singer

C     F    C     F

(continue C   E7  Am  D7 progression)
And he's playing, playing the song
and it's a classic
and his fingers, fingers are bleeding
and his heart is aching out loud

C                                                 F                                   C           F
And the people are clapping and clapping and clapping and clapping
            C                               F                            C          F
and the song he is playing just goes on and on and on
(continue  C    F   C    F)
and it seems like it will never stop
then everybody gets up and does a hop - yeah

C      F7     C     F7  (solo around notes C-Eb-F)

(verse:   C   E7   Am   D7)
Then the entertainer
chained to the piano
gives a nervous grin
to the massive crowd

             C                            F               C                 F
He says here's one about the day I really broke my heart
(continue C   F   C   F)
and he sheds a tear, the audience applauds
everyone shouting - he's so sincere
I can't believe he's here

C                           E7
Then he does his famous
Am            D7   (bass:  D-C-B-A)
song of sorrow
               C           F       C      F
and his melody of pain
             D         Daug
and he bows
               G              Gaug
and the curtain falls

                C             E7
And the white in his eyes
                     Am               D
is reflecting light from the ceiling
           C        E7
as he prays alone
               Am              D
a silent prayer to his lover
                 C
whom he lost
                E7
whom he sings about
                Am                      D
whom he thinks about all the time
       Am               E
he sits for a little bit
         Am                           D    Daug       G
and then he writes another hit  -  ohhhh

C    F7    C     F7  (solo to end)
