Hi there Cheesy

I am having trouble huh  to name a few(4) Dan Johnston songs(and it doesn’t help that I don’t speak English as a primary language embarassed ), there isn’t really a verse or a word he would repeat on the songs that would give them away. cry

Well, the first 2 ones (performed at least in Flex, Vienna 13.10.2002 & Stockholm, Sweden 02.07.2003) they start something like this:

No.1
So won’t you pretty of some let your hair hang down
Let your love come around with the nightmare teeth
As I fit never was and only if just because it never happened before
True love at your door…

No.2
I wanna win, freedom talk of freedom
I’m just a wimp, I’m so trapped in boredom
I touched the shore, how can I get there
To go away, just to be in nowhere…

Then there is a Danny & Nightmares song (catchy tune, a really good song), it is really hard to hear the words because of the sound quality, here goes(from the beginning):

No.3
Good he wasn’t on the skid rows were stock for your Sally
She took concentration and ordered him to perform at her alley
While Paul McCartney was chasing her with a pen & paper clip…

He sometimes reads something like a poem at the end of a concert, goes like this:

No.4
Sarah drove around in her car, she repeat the same story repeat the same joke
And holding up her children in public like puppets
Johnny laid on the railroad tracks, let the train run over he’s head,
They said he was just curious what it felt like to be dead…etc.
…don’t wanna wear my worried shoes, no, no, no, no…

Any help would be helpful. wink

Thanks.

#2 is definitely "Freedom" which he sang regularly on European tour 2003.

It may not be on any album, the words and chords are

G C A D    E A C G   E A C G D   G C A D
I wanna win
Freedom talk of freedom
I’m just a whim
I’m so trapped in boredom
          E  A  C  G     (D)
I touch the shore
How can I get there
To go away just to be nowhere
          G  C  A  D
Last night I dreamed
I died in my sleep
Only to awake
Laying in a coffin
         E  A  C  G   (D)
You were my all
A poster at the mall
You took a fall
I couldn’t call you any more

I would love to hear more about #4 in this list - about what time and at what performances was this read?   Maybe we can locate a recording.

The words are particularly relevant to some real life events for Daniel.

There is a SEARCH feature on http://www.rejectedunknown.com that you can use to try to locate lyrics out of songs - there are lyrics to 60 or so songs on www.rejectedunknown.com of the 360 or so songs that Daniel has published.

So try using it with different combinations of the words you remember..

Cheesy Thanks for the help on song No.2(Freedom), I thought it was called “gone with the wind” since there is a song called that and he says that near the end.

About song No.4(the poem), he read it as a final number at least at:

Nova Cinema, Brussels, Belgium 05.11.2000 &
La Maroquinerie, Paris, France 06.11.2000

Could the Number 4 be "worried shoes" on yip/jump music.

Number 4 is known as "Worried Shoes Revisited" and he's been performing it off and on for many years.

No, it's not the song titled "Worried Shoes" - although he uses that phrase here.  THere are several songs of Daniel's where he makes multiple references to other songs of his.  Like Museum of Love.

The song Worried Shoes lyrics don't match this at all http://www.rejectedunknown.com/lyrics/Song%20Title/Worried%20Shoes.html.   Also, this is read, not sung.  He could add verses to the song, I guess.

Okay!   Great.   Someone is sending me a recording of the Brussells 2000 performance, so we should have a recording of it.

My guess it that is is an "Unpublished poem" - not on any albums, etc.

We'll get the recording, determine a NAME for it, and put it in the discography and maybe make the poem available for download.

Great!

yeah, I have two versions of that song (I called it a-capella song...); it's on the cds that I'll be posting soon on the Yip Share thing. This is one scary song; he sang it at the end of the Paris 2000 show, his eyes closed, he was shaking... relaly scary stuff

This would be the Worried Shoes that was first heard when Dan was recording with the Rhythm Rats in around 1987 -- a personal fave of mine!!! That recording features a fantastic spoken bit in the middle that totally recreates the Austin music scene atmosphere of the time. Those bastard documentary producers still have damn near ALL my original hand-drawn Dan cassettes, otherwise I'd transcribe it here.

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...
