i dont know if you're familiar with kathy mc carty 's tribute to daniel's songs but if you dont i strongly suggest you try to get it !!!

that record has the same effect on me than daniels best work , it's absolutely wonderful , seriously . you should hear her versions of Museum of Love , I had a dream , or Grievances... they're amazing , but each one of the 19 tracks on the album are great really . shes got one of the loveliest female voice i've heard in all my life - full of joy and sadness at the same time like daniel's . its more easy-listening than daniels versions but its not mainstream  ; it has a kind of lo-fi spirit but its definitely great-sounding and well-produced .by far the best covers of dan songs ive heard .actually one of favourite albums of all time .

i was wondering if other people on this forum have it and their opinion on this must-have record ...

I really love this album too. I really appreciate that she kept faithfull to Daniel's material, yet was able to arrange and perform his music so effectively, and in her own style. In its way, DDE is a work of genius -- from both Daniel Johnston and Kathy McKarty.

My question is, where is she now? I was really hoping for more from her, but after DDE and Sorry Entertainer were released, nothing. Anything current about Kathy McKarty is impossible to track down on the internet. I hope she's alive and well, and maybe she just went off and joined the Quakers or something.

The word on the streets   about Kathy McCarty is that she married Daniels very best friend David Thornberry, and they are living in the Austin, Texas area!!!!

Kathy McCarty's Dead Dog's Eyeball was my first listening of daniel's songs (When I bought the album I thought it was daniel  ).  It's a great album, every song is well done and sounds awsome.  I highly suggest picking it up.

back in '98, I used to listen to "Dead Dog's Eyeball" towards the end of my senior college year while writing a thesis, getting together an exhibit of artwork, getting over a relationship that didn't end the way I wanted it to, and facing the inevitability of change. That album was just the emotional release that I needed, and I don't know what I would have done without it. I hope the new tribute album puts Daniel's music in a new context just as well, if not better.

yah, its too bad Kathy McCarty hasn't put out any other solo stuff since then......her voice/lyrics are too good to be a household name. The Glass Eye stuff was just plain beautiful. It's all become obscure and rare, but if it was commonplace and popular, it wouldn't be as meaningful.........

Brian Beattie told me awhile back that it may not be much longer before the "lost" Glass Eye album gets issued along with reissues of their classic stuff. Then again, they were saying the same thing five years ago.

As far as Kathy solo, she's pretty much a housewife, but occasionally someone will goad her into performing. For awhile she was selling her homemade pies, which are as good as or better than her music!!! Back in early 2001, David Bean of the Judy's had me track her down and force her to record a cover version of "Guyana Punch" for a tribute album that was supposed to tie in with the 20th anniversary of the release of the Judy's "Washarama." Three years later, the little hermit still hasn't actually issued the dang tribute!!! (I should have known -- after all, the Judy's final album "Land of Plenty" was recorded and pressed in 1991, and he still hasn't gotten around to getting the CDs out from his storage room and into the stores!!!) At this point, I daresay it's a bit late for that 20th anniversary party!

Let's hope Daniel's trib doesn't suffer a similar fate!

"Hello Young Lovers" by Glass Eye is one of the best CDs that anybody could find anywhere......when the lyrics sink in, and when each song's meaning becomes clear on it, you are blown away before you know it....
I only have that and "bent by nature".
I wish the other stuff of theirs was more accessible.... hopefully one day.

oh, and I once wrote an email to Brian Beattie a couple years back, and he wrote back telling me that he sometimes forgets about Glass Eye........so hard to believe that its possible.

Oh, I don't think that ever went past being a home-based business with her as the sole employee, plus I'm pretty sure she doesn't even have much interest in doing it at that level anymore. ("Mmmmmm... Kathy's pie!")

He recently told me that he was in some crappy garage punk band when he was a teenager (can't recall the name now) and they put out like around 100 copies of a 45rpm single. Then, years later, some big name rock writer chose to focus on that record in his book as the ultimate example of primitive, raw rock ever made, so now copies of the 45 sell for like $10,000! He says that he goes back to his hometown occasionally to try and scrounge up any remaining scratchy copies he can find, and I think he actually paid for his house/studio with the few that he still had himself.

Naturally, he added, when he was in college or so, and he was keeping all his most private treasures - like photos, notebooks, and a stash of 20 or so of the singles - in a bucket, somebody dropped some fast-food refuse in it thinking it was a trash can, and then somebody else saw that and emptied "the trash'!!!

Think about it - the garbage truck that woke you up this morning could just as easily be carrying a potential quarter-million bucks inside it!

Oh... I can't remember if I detailed this before, but if you want to find something like Dead Dog's Eyeball on Ebay and don't have time to keep checking for it all the time, just punch in a couple of sample words (McCarty Eyeball) and the entire title should appear in front of you with instructions on how to get an email each time that item comes up for bids. NOTE: This seems to only work if at least one copy of the item is either currently up on Ebay or has been within the 90 day period before they delete old files, or at least there's some reason I can't get it to happen right now.

Currently there are no copies of DD Eyeball on Ebay proper, but there are FIVE of them available thru http://www.half.ebay.com, ranging from $10 to $25.

Please allow me to correct myself! In a recent phone chat with Brian Beattie, I was assured that the next Glass Eye-related project to hit the racks will NOT be the CD releases of the band's classic LPs or their "lost" material, but Kathy's new solo album. Furthermore, K is apparently chomping at the bit to get the thing issued and make her return to the stage. Whether this means she'll be touring the world or anything like that is still a question for the ol' "magic eight ball".

Now, if only someone would announce a Moniker* reunion!

*(Moniker was Glass Eye's short-lived hard rock/Spinal Tap alter ego. Kathy performed in the band as the pencil-thin-moustached, sideways-ball-cap-wearing he-man axemaster Nick Name (IIRC). FYI, Brian says that Moniker also recorded an EP's worth of unfinished songs that may be completed and released someday.)

After a long search for Dead Dogs EyeBall not to mention being outbid and sniped several times on e-bay, i finally had someone from the forum hook me up (much thanks) i gotta say i was not as blown away by it as i thought i would be. I liked it but it just didnt have that impact that i was expecting. Before i heard it, i had only heard ''worried shoes" from the ep and i will say that it blew me away completely and i thoght if the whole cd is like this then i cant wait to hear it!! Unfortunatly it was not even on it its on the ep. Like i said i liked it but my girlfriend absolutly hated it she said it "sounds like a bad karoke of great songs." Ididnt think it was that bad but honestly i was not moved. Anyways if you are a fan of Daniels music its worth having.

I haven't checked lately, but BarNone said they were going to release Marlo and Huge, and I'm waiting. Wah!

I remember seeing Glass Eye once or twice at the Theatre Gallery in Dallass. I can't wait for Daniel's Tribute album.
