Hey Stress Boy,

You are one fine Daniel J. guru, but why don't you focus those bitter feelings on signing new artists to your own audio cassette empire?  I'm sure you can find a hipster band to fill that empty roster.

Stop dwelling on the past and start working towards something positive like updating your own website.    Change the color or something.  It looks so AOL circa 1997.

Remember the Doctor said to take your medication in the morning & before you go to bed.

Hopefully, this album will be one giant leap for Dan, not some angry ego-trippin' exercise for some stressed out jerk with too much time on his hands.

We love you, but not when you hit below the belt.

Good Night.

(Without actually doing any checking, I just thought I'd fix a couple of obvious errors in these lyrics while I'm here. No big deal, corrections in ALL CAPS.)

Gonna rock, gonna rock, gonna rock this town tonight
and i love that marijuana, makes me feel so high
tell all your troubles goodbye, somehow escaped the lie
of the Hollywood WHORE

Singing rockÖ

Weīre downtown on the straight and narrow way
but what did we find, just time AUSTIN texas usa
everybody wearing a frown, feeling so awful down
linda mccartney is dead, thatís what the tv said

(The following verse loses me - the last line as I recall it is "Always seemed to please", but how that could possibly turn into something about a "tainted eyeball" is beyond my imagining so I'm guessing this must come from a different version than the one I'm quoting...)

She was so pretty in her kitchen and everything
i had a picture of her, the bossy girl so cool
and the macaroni & cheese, and every tainted eyeball

(By the way, if the song and the old video for "Rock This Town" are being used to promote the tribute CD, does that mean new material will replace it in its planned opening "hit single" slot on next year's "Lost & Found"? This could be interesting...)

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

Do you know something I don't? - wait, let me ask that again - what do you know that I don't?   Is there an "old" video for Rock This Town?

The one on this CD was "rushed" together by Mark Miller (currently living in the UK) and team for the Tribute - they had to trim the song down from 6 + minutes to 3 1/2 or something.

So is there an "old" video for Rock This Town?   Or are you just assuming it was done with the original song ("years ago")?

Rock This Town       Daniel Johnston Ė Lost and Found - 2004

Here's a rare chance to check our observations against the original!!

I think these the published lyrics (the lyrics on on the HTML / data CD (CD2) of the Tribute).   (hmmm... found one error - there may be others).

Rock This Town

Gonna rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna Rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles good bye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

And Iíll never get in to heaven if Iíve been their before
And all my dreams are broken Iím a mad man at your door

And I cried a million tears
I may never see her again
Iím more dead then alive
In her many spacious memories

Gonna rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna Rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles good bye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

She was so pretty we were kissing and everything
I have a picture of her
She was a foxy girl so cool
And the macaroni and cheese always seemed to please
And everyday was idol as they got down on their knees

Gonna rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna Rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles good bye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

We went downtown in the straight and narrow way
And what did we find
A real good time Austin Texas USA
Let freedom ring everybody sing
Linda McCarty is dead
Thatís what the TV said

Gonna rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna Rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles good bye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

I took my Guitar to a heavy metal store
I told them all about the golden rule
They just laugh in my face and called me a space case
The last of the human race the last of the human race

Gonna rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna Rock, Gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles good bye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

Gonna rock, Gonna rock

Hi Message Board Peeps,

Just to clarify, the music video for ROCK THIS TOWN has been made twice. Back in the summer of 1998, I would go visit Dan or he would stay with me and from there we shot a bunch of ďcrazyĒ footage. Nothing special, but there are a few nice images with Dan rocking out in his backyard with some monsters on black & white super-8 film.  Iím guessing the video plays on the Austin Music Network and thatís it.    Wouldnít know for sure, since I donít live in Austin anymore. Sad

However, the latest & greatest video looks better, but this time around, animators Greg Gilpatrick & Tom Shirley took the helm.  I was just the silly producer.   Cartoon artists / filmmakers KAZ and Gary Lieb also helped out with the design.  FYI, Dick & Bill Johnston assisted by taking digi-pics of Dan which made a big difference.  It was a big team effort with lots of love mixed in like a cake made from the heavens.

Just like the first video, we had a small budget, but this time we had something like 6 weeks to make the darn thing, which isnít that much time in animation land, but we did it.

There you go.  Hope that made sense.

Enjoy!

Good night,

Mark

Well, this is certainly something that we're going to have to track down and share!

Also, I figure the old one contains the "full" version of the song.  That would be interesting.

If you have any clue how one could get hold of it, let me know.

Later!

Hey, Meatman! The video is fantastic! Great job - in fact, the whole CD-ROM thing is very impressive. It was a great idea to put a whole bunch of Daniel's artwork on there.

Kudos to all smiley ... now we can start waiting for "Lost and Found".
