I've found 1990 to be the best album by Daniel that wasn't produced by himself. It seems to me the only album that is really focused on Daniel and the raw heart-felt music he makes. I like the later albums too, but 1990 is a real gem to me. Any thoughts?

1990 is my favourite Daniel Johnston record of all. Right down to the front cover, and the smug, harrowed expression on his face. What's that painting all about? With the storm in the background and the truncated tree. I think it visually depicts the unique mood of this album in a way that really helps gain some insight into it. The song Tears Stupid Tears contaisn my favourite single Daniel Johnston lyric, 'I was born in the body and right from the start those tears stupid tears being tearing us apart.' I juxtapose it with Daniel singing 'I really don't know why I cam here' on Walking the Cow. Daniel Johnston is so effortlessly existential. He seems to be able to sing about the traumatic core of life as easy as he breathes.
