but definetly, to me, Jump Music has the "widest range of styles' factor, so.......

After playing many of Dan's albums for many many friends I think I would agree with Mindwalk because most people respond INSTANTLY to songs like "Museum of Love" and "I Remember Painfully."  I have found that it is easier for people to get into those songs right off the bat for SOME reason... maybe because the songs all sound so cute when played on the chord organ... I'm sure I could name MANY reasons.  

I think, however, that the more I listen to Daniel's stuff the more I realize I have a new favorite every month or so... so, I wind up playing whatever my favorite is at that time - and people ALWAYS respond in SOME way to his records because there is that vulnerability and amazing knack for melody on all his albums.  I am also very fond of showing people "Frankenstien Love" because it is (in my opinion) full of AMAZING live versions of many TRULY AWESOME songs and the impact on you when you hear it is something you always remember... in MY opinion, that is the best live album of all time.

Some people tend to like his latest records, specially the live ones, where his voice is not "that" high pitched......for  some people he sounds too childish....

I like the both "sides" of his voice....

He sounds mature now, specially on why me? and on "fear yourself" songs like "love returns".....

But, i believe that the "feeling" he puts on his early recordings is unique....
Who else could reproduce the vibe of songs like "Danny Don´t Rapp" or "Don´t let the sun go down on your grievances"...or the Joe "Suite" from "how, how are you?"

I'd say "Hi How are You"  I'm not sure about the greatest hits..I don't have it.....it might be too many hits! too overwhelming.....so many ideas....but on the otherhand I first got into his music thru the movie "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and that was alot of great songs on that.....tough one.....I don't know, I think "1990" is excellent....I think for someone that has only one Daniel Johnston album and likes it and doesn't know what to buy next, I would definitely say "1990"......

I always wonder why more people don't list Songs of Pain when they're talking about really great DJ albums.  It was my first and I think still my favorite.
That tape made me cry!

16 are from Songs of pain 1980 "Like a Monkey in a Zoo" is # 1

Hello I'm a first time replier. I'v been a fan for awhile and think his cassette stuff is the best. So beautiful so mind blowing. For a first time listener I would definitely have to go with his two live albums Frankenstein Love and Why Me. Although most of the material was written after his cassettes I just love them. They are very accesible and pure. My favorite cassettes are More Songs of Pain and Continued Story
