One thing that always interested me in The Devil and Daniel Johnston
was the part where he had to constantly re-record albums to give people
because he didn't have a way to duplicate them.

So that means that there has to be a bunch of people out there with these
cassettes that are much different then the ones we know. I think It'd be a good idea to find some of them and release these alternate versions of songs that we all love on a compilation or something. What do you think?

I was thinking the same thing.

Especially if they were a little different. But if they were practically the same, it may not be worth while.

I'm still down to hear some of his unreleased stuff. I'm sure there's a lot more. Most of the stuff that has been released was handpicked from an archive full of stuff.

I also want to see video footage. You know there are hours and hours of that stuff.

You don't know the half of it - if and when the Randy Kemper video archives get into the hands of the public you will be amazed. Kemper was Dan's "manager" in the mid-80s, a semi-professional videographer and amateur stoner who "managed" to achieve immortality as the guy Dan "whammed" with the pipe. (If ya wanna try tracking him down on the net, I think his old video company was called Dyna Saur Tracs, but I'm totally guessing about the spelling there).

As far as music - yeah, there's way too many original songs yet unheard to bother with alternate taks of existing stuff that all sound alike. The best thing about having multiple masters in Dan's case is the possibility of picking and choosing among versions to get the best SOUND QUALITY.

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

Notdan,

Thanks for the info. Say, are you the dude that's interviewed in TD&DJ? If so, wow, an honor. You're pretty funny, man.
