Am just listening to this album again and I've always thought that the songs on it and Daniel's delivery sound very Elvis Costello.

Anyone know if he's a Costello fan at all or was he listening to a lot of his stuff at the time it was recorded perhaps?

He was and still is a very big fan of Elvis Costello. He told me that shortly before recording The What of Whom he saw Elvis Costello live and that during one song they made eye contact. He went home and wrote "Man Obsessed" that night.

'Never Get To Heaven' from 'More Songs Of Pain' sounds particularly like Elvis Costello too.

I was not aware of that - and until recently I was the owner of the "What of Whom" master tape, as you know.

I made Dan a copy of the "M&M" CD a few months ago (which I in turn got from comic book artist Mick Gray, best known as inker on Alan Moore's "Promethea" and a recent "Hawkman" series). The disc is a fantastic 25-track comp of demos for all the songs made by the underrated songwriting team of McCartney and MacManus (Paul McCartney and "Elvis Costello"), and since then it has easily outdistanced any other CD I've ever given him in terms of his repeated expressions of gratefulness.

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...
