how well will daniel be remembered in say 50 years time?? I know in austin he will probably be remembered for ever, however on a more global scale how do you think he will be remembered. i'm shocked that it's taken be this long to hear any of his work, and i regard myself as having quite a diverse taste in music and even like bands who have stated him as an influence (i have however only discovered he influences them after i have heard of daniel himself). i think it would be a travesty that such a genius could well be far less appreciated given half a century. alternatively his music could well thrive after he stops making music (which i hope is not for a very long time!), after all many genius' haven't been understood by the masses until long after they have stopped. Another possibility is that his level of support and admiration stays outside the mainstream, however is strong enough to be remembered for a long long time. What do you think??

Sometimes it seems more bands and musicians claim to have been "influenced" by Daniel than the amount of records Daniel has actually sold. Either way, it can only mean more and more people will hear about him and spend a little time listening to what is coming from their speakers.

I think Daniel is fortunate to be seeing the results of his hard work after all these years. I'm glad it happened while he was still young enough to enjoy it. Will his name be around 50 years from now? No question. But it may come by way of the art books rather than the music industry. A couple well placed college thesis papers and who knows?

I think it would be interesting to flash ahead 50 years (for many reasons!) and hear what's happening. I have a gut feeling it will be a rural acoustic, roots-based music, not produced with the aid of petroleum or money-glutted corporations but rather next door neighbors and neo juke joints where self-taught musicians play real musical instruments interpreting the compositions of this hour of the world. In other words, it will be quite a different world, but people will still be falling in love and longing to belong, and they will be playing Daniel Johnston's music to pass the time and entertain each other.

Let's see. I'll be 95 in 50 years. Let's plan a get together at the home...

Media pretty much controls what we see and how we see it unless we go out of our way to find good and meaningful things. There will be those who remember Daniel, but unfortunately he will never get the credit he deserves. Success and notoriety in music are measured in record sales and #1 chart topping hits.

Yeah, like Robert Johnson, Clifford Brown, the Velvet Underground...

Art transcends trends. Daniel's music will be remembered long after the "success and notoriety" of commercial musicians has been moved to the Trivial Pursuit bins of History. And I would argue he is getting the credit he deserves from those who have been listening all along. There's still so much more to come...

I think that Daniel will be greatly remember in about 50 years and past that. The best way to immortality is to live a life worth remembering,Daniel has already done and gone far past a life worth remembering.
