In search for a solution to Daniel's touring scrupples, we've had several experimental shows where a LOCAL BAND signs up to back up Daniel during his show.   The shows with One Mississippi in Austin were terrific.   This is currently the plan for the CANADA and BELGIUM tours.

We need INPUT / ADVICE / HELP from you on the following:

1)  What, in your opinion, would be the right songs for Daniel to do on these tours with local bands backing him up?
2)  In the following list of songs, which would you vote FOR or AGAINST for Daniel to do with LOCAL BANDS in this way:

Casper the Friendly Ghost
Devil Town
Funeral Home
Go
Hey Joe
Life In Vain
Living Life
Rock n Roll EGA
Rock This Town
Speeding Motorcycle
True Love Will Find You
Worried Shoes
Walking The Cow
Wicked World

3) of those songs, we are currently lacking CHORDS for the following.  Can you contribute those (by submitting in a TOPIC REPLY in this topic thread)?:

Funeral Home
Rock This Town
Speeding Motorcycle

Thanks.

I don't understand the voting thing - if Daniel's OK with doing any or all of those songs, then the bands in question should decide which ones they can learn quickly and/or perform the best.

As far as the general idea, though, it's an excellent one. Harvey Sid Fisher's done that for a number of years now, and it's worked great for him. Harvey's not really a fan of Dan's (their styles of songwriting are pretty much polar opposites) but if you have any questions to ask of someone who's used this strategy extensively, I'd be happy to talk to HSF about it - actually, he has his home phone number posted up on his website [www.harveysidfisher.com], if you wanna give him a ring yourself!

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

zack26 did rock this town a whle back

http://messageboard.hihowareyou.com/index.php/topic,924.0.html

Rock This Town

Note: C/F lick   X-X-5-5-5-X   to   X-X-7-5-6-X

E  (lick: e-e-g-g#-b-b-c#-e)
Gonna rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

A  (lick: a-a-c-c#-e-e-f#-e)
Well I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles goodbye
                                                                     E
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood horror (whore?)

C                               D
And I’ll never get to heaven
            G                     C   C/F   C
If I’ve been there before
And all my dreams are broken
I’m a madman at your door
And I cried a million tears
I may never see her again
I’m more dead than alive
In her many spacious memories

Gonna rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

Well I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles goodbye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood horror

She was so pretty
We were kissing and everything
I had a picture of her
She was a foxy girl so cool
And the macaroni and cheese
Always seemed to please
And every day (Huh)
As they got down on their knees

Singing rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight
Gonna rock, gonna rock
Gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
It makes me feel so high
Troubles goodbye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood horror

We’re downtown
In the straight and narrow way
And what did we find
A real good time Austin, Texas USA
Let freedom ring
Everybody say
Linda McCartney is dead
That’s what the TV said

Let’s rock, we’re gonna rock
Wer’re gonna rock this town tonight
We’re gonna rock, we’re gonna rock
We’re gonna rock this town tonight

Well I love that marijuana
Makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles goodbye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood horror

I took my guitar
To the heavy metal school
I told them all about
The golden rule
They just laughed in my face
And called me a space case
The last of the human race
The last of the human race

Let’s rock, we’re gonna rock
Wer’re gonna rock this town tonight
We’re gonna rock, we’re gonna rock
We’re gonna rock this town tonight

And I love that marijuana
Makes me feel so high
Tell all your troubles goodbye
Somehow escape the lie of the Hollywood whore

Speeding Motorcycle

melody:  c d# e g e c   c c b c (repeat)
            c Bb a g d# e g e c
            c d# e g e c   c c b c

Speeding motorcycle, won't you change me?
Speeding motorcycle, won't you change me?
In a world of funny changes
Speeding motorcycle, won't you change me?

C    F    G    F  (repeat)
Speeding motorcycle of my heart
Speeding motorcycle, always changing me
Speeding motorcycle, don't you drive recklessly

Hurt you deep inside but you never slowed down

C    F     G     F  (all the way to the end)
Speeding motorcycle in my heart
Speeding motorcycle, let's speed smart
'Cause we don't want to wreck but
We can do a lot of tricks
We don't have to break our necks
To get our kicks
Speeding motorcycle, the road is ours
Speeding motorcycle, let's speed some more
We don't need reason and we don't need logic
Cause we've got feeling and we're dang proud of it
Speeding motorcycle, there's nothing you can't do
Speeding motorcycle, I love you
Speeding motorcycle, let's just go
Speeding motorcycle
Let's go let's go let's go
Oo oo

Funeral Home

G
Funeral home, funeral home
C                     G
Going to the funeral home
G
Got me a coffin shiny and black
D                                                       G

My band just recorded a sorta gospel-ish version of "Living Life" of which an mp3 will be up next week here: www.letterbomb.net

If Daniel ever plans to come to/around Chicago I could die a happy man if we could back him on that one!

hello. i recently purchased tickets to see daniel perform on May 10th in Chicago.
I just saw this post -  i am a singer/guitarist for a local band from the Milwaukee/Kenosha Wi area we are called The BlowHoles.  is daniel still looking for back up bands? we'd LOVE to bakc him up on the 10th of May as we are gigantic fans.  you can view my bands site here:
www.myspace.com/theblowholes

you can also download/hear a free 10 song promo at:
www.archive.org/details/blowholes

we play a mixture of experimental, indie, psychedellic, acousitc, punk rock music.

So can anyone tell me how exactly we'd go about trying to perform with danny? i assume there is already a lot of bands responding???

if you can give us any info please do so.

many thanks

I just read this post again and realized I didn't offer any input on 1 and 2 and no else much did either. So here it goes. I'll tackle 2 first.

"2)  In the following list of songs, which would you vote FOR or AGAINST for Daniel to do with LOCAL BANDS in this way:"

I'm assuming when you say local band you are referring to a rock band with guitars and no piano. I would be very annoyed to go see DJ and someone else played piano.

YES - Casper the Friendly Ghost - Great choice. One of the songs that many people know or have heard some version of (e.g. the one in Kids). Also sounds good on guitar or piano.

YES - Devil Town - Good choice. Nothing for the local band to do except sing along with audience if it's a good crowd.

YES - Funeral Home - Another short simple song for a band to learn and one of those songs that sticks in your head like a TV jingle.

NO - Go - I've just never been a fan of this song.

YES - Hey Joe - Great simple song that sounds good on guitar.

YES - Life In Vain - Good simple song.

NO - Living Life - I really like this song but the chord progressions are a little tricker than most on this list.

YES - Rock n Roll EGA - Simple song.

YES - Rock This Town - Sure this a a good one.

YES - Speeding Motorcycle - Another great song sure to be known by many.

YES - True Love Will Find You - Nothing to say but hell yes.

NO - Worried Shoes - I can't really imagine this song played on anything but a beat up chord organ.

NO - Walking The Cow. The Eddie Veder video on YouTube has soured me on this song. Possibly forever which pisses me off because it's the second DJ songs I figured out how to play. Sweetheart was first.

YES - Wicked World - This song sounds good on guitar and I just like it.

"1)  What, in your opinion, would be the right songs for Daniel to do on these tours with local bands backing him up?"

I like how the songs picked come from across many albums. If I was picking, I'd swap Wicked World for Like a Monkey in a Zoo on Songs of Pain. I think more people can identify that song more than a preachy song like Wicked World. I think next I'd throw in the Sun Shines Down on Me. I already voted hell yes on Caspar and Speeding Motorcycle but Yip Jump is one of DJ'd best albums. I'd throw in another - Sorry Entertainer or Don't Let the Sun Go Down... On 1990, how about Tears Stupid Tears. Moving forward in time, how about something off of Artistic Vice - Honey I Miss You or My Life is Starting Over. You have 2 songs off Fun. Not one of the best albums. Consider swapping RocknRoll for Silly Love. Moving into not so sure when the song was written time, I'd consider The Spook, Now, Try to Love. I heard a touching version of Bloody Rainbow when I saw DJ in LA though I'm still not sure what the song is supposed to be about.

I'm assuming the local bands will have little to no interaction with DJ before the show so sticking to simple songs probably would be the safest route. Maybe give the bands a few harder songs and give them the choice of doing or not doing them if DJ is flexible.

Also, I would be leary of anyone who offers a kazoo as a proper DJ instrument but thats me. I play the ukulele so I go ape**** whenever someone pulls out a kazoo. The uke is a real instrument - not a joke.
