it might be just me, I don't know but I was listening to Cadillac Ranch from Bruce Springsteen's The River and started thinking,.. hmm i know this song but it doesn't sound like this.

and then i hear the chorus with that line "shiny and black" and thought, that sounds like funeral home!
doesn't it??

it's kinda the same melody...

so, I've never heard that he was an influence? was he? or am I just hearing things?

It's a direct "inspiration," appropriated by Daniel to fit his musical needs. I think Daniel himself was questioned about the similarities and jokingly (sarcastically) replied something along the lines of "What? Really? It sounds just like that Springsteen song? You're kidding! I never would have known!"

You can hear hints of other songs or parts of songs throughout Daniel's discography, and of course, he uses that kind of appropriation in his art all the time (Harvey comic's, Kirby's Red Skull and Captain America, Hulk, Thor, etc., Ditko's Marvel work...) They exist as tools for Daniel, like all of art history does for every artist. This stuff is out there, and to keep it alive, every once in awhile, it gets filtered and re-invented and used in another way by the next in line. (A quick glance at the Billboard 100 will demonstrate this far better than my humble examples.)

Just like him quoting "Every Breath You Take" in "Rock This Town". I thought that was inspired...fit the song perfectly.

Wait...

Soon you'll be hearing other artist's sampling Daniel. It's not a matter of if, but rather when.

So when that new Jay Z or Danger Mouse song comes on, and in the background is a funky little chord organ refrain, don't be surprised!

You've heard it here, first!

I've already done it. Nothing I'm releasing (for obvious reasons), but I did sample the opening part of Sorry Entertainer and set a hip-hop beat on it.
Actually, Daniel's songs do have some parts that would lend it well to sampling. If I can work up the guts, I just may do a techno version of Chord Organ Blues... cheesy

Can it REALLY be nothing more than simple coincidence that Paul McCartney's excellent 2001 album "Driving Rain" kicks off with a few bars from "Despair Came Knocking"? (Come ON people - listen to it and tell me I'm not 100% right on this one!!!)

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

I haven't listened to anything McCartney's done in years, but I'll check that song out...

speaking of springsteen-daniel connections, i work at a record store that is frequented by springsteen (jack's music shoppe in red bank,nj) and i recently had the re-issue of "yip/jump music" on my employee picks wall. springsteen asked about it and i told him that daniel is the one of the greatest songwriters of all time. needless to say, he bought it. i haven't gotten a chance to find out what he thought of it yet, but i would hope that he loved it! i wonder if daniel would be glad to know that springsteen is a proud owner of his album.
