16  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Fear Yourself - Love Your Enemy on: February 13, 2007, 12:28:20 AM
I don't spend much time here these days, but looking at a SPAM report, this caught my eye.  So I ramble...

Daniel does not "think" that the U.S.A. is "evil", or misguided or even off-track.   He is not given to the current day's political mob mentality does not travel with the anti-Bush crowd.   People regularly read their private political or religious / non-religious persuasions into Daniel, and that is called "projection."  It happens.  We live with it.  Big deal!   We don't get "offended" or demand retractions.

For example, images like http://store.hihowareyou.com/images/products/S2505-Whitney-med.jpg with "God Bless America" doing a heil-hitler style salute, a swastika on his arm, and "Fear Yourself" at the bottom, is not a political commentary on the U.S.A. or a statement that the U.S. is evil.  I've asked him, and its not part of his sentiment.  If it's not possible for you to see anything except that when you look at a piece like this, then you might want to consider if you are projecting your sentiments on other things as well.

Secondly, you might want to consider that SHOULD Daniel Dale Johnston have a view about something (such as the imagery on the dollar bill as he rambled on in a mentally bizarre state), it doesn't define reality or become a cause to defend or a club to beat over a fellow man's head.

Daniel is delightfully insightful about a lot of things, and that might promote us to listen more carefully to lots of things he says.  When that happens, there's lots of neat stuff there.   (Sorry. Yes, I still use the word "neat").   However...

Depite hysterical states of his mental illness where he might speak with a lot of "conviction", he doesn't proclaim himself a medium or wizard or prophet, AND IF HE DID, you would be foolish to accept that as a VALID or TRUE statement.  (How to tell the difference is subject for another discussion)

We err if we treat what he says, means, or doesn't say or mean as a "cause" to be defended to the "verbal death"

Third, I appeal to you to hold to your senses even in this cyber world.   Don't surrender all personal respect in petty verbal disputes with your cyber brother where you surrender dignity and restraint to insult and press "SEND" for some worldly gratification in a momentary and meaningless exchange.

We give near-full lattitude in this forum, but sometimes it might be appropriate to clamor for some review of the quality and worthiness of exchanges here.

If you are to engage in battle by Daniel's definition, it is a battle we must do with ourself.  If you haven't figured it out yet, the most pressing battle with Satan is something you do with yourself and about yourself.

If you want to get excited about something, defend something, or fight for something OUTSIDE YOURSELF, let it be a a selfless and worthy thing, and let the fight will be done with respect.   When that happens, winning may "feel" like loosing.  So lose!  Because if it is RIGHT, that kind of loss is winning - This, of course, is said for those of you who can understand that kind of language - which lojomcgatta should understand.

Fourth: be FAIR in your words.   To be "FAIR" to me would not be to portray me as I am at my worse.  Neither at my rare best.   But a fair portrayal would not portray me only as my worst even in the heat of a debate - to do so would show you look only for my demise for personal gratification.

It is not necessary to be verbally abusive to make a point.  When you do that with names, expletives or disparaging speech, it does not sustain your view at all.   Period.  It doesn't do that.  It MIGHT allow you to BELIEVE inside yourself for personal gratification that you've made a point, but it injects a destructive poison in everyone who listens.

If you loose the internal battle and give in by pressing "SEND" with a petty put-down, you are forfeiting something precious in yourself that is hard (not impossible) to retrieve when lost.  Anyone who doesn't stumble in their words is perfect in every way.  We all mess up.   But we don't have to make a habit of it.

Finally logomcgatto: The original post in this thread says "Daniel displays america as the beast" - you then deny that there is any meaning except what your words insist.   Well, instead of us guessing whether you have a point or not, display the art you are talking about.   Email it to me at dejected@rejectedunknown.com and I'll post it here.

Also, logomcgatto: I might surprise a lot of people by AGREEING with many things you say, but I'm sorry to have to say: shame on you for this KIND of talk (yes, an old fashion "SHAME" statement!!) saying things like: "excatly fool talking dosent prove that i am wrong fool. I win god always wins"

Who calls other men "fools"?   Who are you to love from the heart and love as yourself?   What arrogance would cause you to declare a self-proclaimed "win" by putting others down?  YOU know what I'm talking about.

Do you think you have some great insight to tell others?  If you can't say it in love, you don't have the right to say it BY YOUR OWN VIEW of right and wrong.  Shape up or stay off the board.  Can you respond to a brotherly rebuke or is the beast in you going to have the upper hand in this?

Mentally stable or not doesn't mean you are exempt from these rules.   You will have to control yourself in regard to how you feel about and treat others while you say what is on your mind.

If you want to talk to me about this, email me at dejected@rejectedunknown.com.
17  General Discussion / Fan Forums / REQUEST FOR VIDEO RECORDING of the Sept 2001 Target Commercial on: October 06, 2006, 10:53:09 AM
Okay - this is a long shot - but there is a need to see the video of the September 2001 Target commercial with Mary Lou Lord's singing of Daniel's "Speeding Motorcycle".    Is there any chance that anyone actually captured that, and would be willing to share it.    Let me know!   Thank.s
18  General Discussion / News Talk / Re: Continued Story/Hi How Are You CD Reissue mistake on: September 07, 2006, 04:43:51 PM
This was just brought to my attention.   A limited run of these have track 3 from Yip Jump Music replacing track 3 of Continued Story / Hi How Are You.  Instructions for replacing your CD will be posted on www.rejectedunknown.com in the next few days.

Meanwhile, the digitally remastered track 3 can currently be downloaded from RejectedUnknown.com as the mp3 of the week.

20  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Why is the DJ Store not selling..... on: May 12, 2006, 03:44:43 AM
Electric Ghosts is a compilation shared with other artist done with consent; Freak Brain was also "by consent" as a limited release; conditional for both was that they not be presented as releases by Daniel Johnston, etc.

Unfortunately www.rejectedunknown.com and www.hihowareyou.com have too much traffic - especially from first time visitors - to present either of these CDs for sale.  They are not formal Daniel Johnston releases - the OMISSION serves to minimize "consumer confusion" and the very real negative impact of "too many releases out there."

The current official releases including "Welcome To My World" are the best representations of Daniel's music to first time buyers.  Sales of that CD benefit Daniel far and above these ancilary works.

For fans who "want it all", my recommendation is that if you can find them, buy them.  In any case, thanks for your consideration for using Daniel's web sites, as these sites benefit Daniel and sites selling either of those CDs don't (at all).

22  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Finding some distraction.... on: December 06, 2005, 07:04:42 PM
I'm reluctant to say this has to be the meaning, but his name is "Daniel Dale Johnston", so the "DD" seemed like a "positive ID" - like saying, "yeah, this is me!".   But it could mean anything, really.

I just find it enthrauling how much is put in the image and it remains so simple.

Here's an interesting recent drawing...  I've posted a blow-up of the box where there is some writing I can't quite interpret the letters.

So what do you make of it (that is, the picture in general, and maybe the words in particular...)?

25  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Kathy McCarty's new WEB SITE and ALBUM on: May 14, 2005, 10:50:21 PM
Check out  the NEW WEB SITE:  http://www.kathymccarty.info

The re-release of Kathy McCarty's 1994 Daniel Johnston covers album "Dead Dog's Eyeball" is a rich and classy production of 22 covers.   The re-release of the album includes 2 new bonus tracks:

"It's Over"
"Love Wheel"

and three VIDEOS:

"Living Life" (with clips from the movie "Before Sunrise - where the song is included on that movie's soundtrack)
"Rocket Ship", and
"Sorry Entertainer.

I had no idea the video's existed, and they are MTV-class productions, but probably with a little "more" class!

Kathy's NEW album produced by Brian Beatty is "Another Day In the Sun"

The web site appears 90% complete, and is a work-in-progress, so check back regularly to see it develope!

The "Guidelines" (currently missing) promoted open (even intense) discussion, and discouraged censorship.  That material is currently still missing.  Hopefully it can be restored.

I happened to be working on this video today (converting to digital) and after reading this post, I took these stills.

I'm not so convinced in it Matthew - for one thing this guy looks like Matthew does today, and this was made in 1994.   Well, I take that back - I guess Matthew is in his 30's.

Anyway, I thought I'd share these stills.
