1  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Bowling Green Oct 2nd Starry Nights Festival on: September 21, 2010, 02:23:36 PM
The October 2nd show in Bowling Green, and a October 30 show in Houston, Texas are all that are on the tour schedule and currently there are NO OTHER DATES in the works.

Dan vacilitates in whether or not he cares to be touring at all, and for the time being, he's finding all the fulfillment he "needs" in staying at home and taking things as they come.

There is "talk" about doing some COLLEGE SHOWS when the COLLEGE RADIO SERIES takes root, but even then, Daniel will have to agree to the idea....    Just check the site occasionally.

EVENTUALLY (I understand) there will be an email list you can SIGN UP for on www.rejectedunknown.com that will notify you of anything relating to Daniel Johnston that's going on in your area.
2  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Daniel pretty much NEVER replies on: September 21, 2010, 02:20:04 PM
Sorry to say, but Daniel pretty much never replies.    I've never known him to do it, and I have seen people send him self-addressed stamped envelopes and even send CASH asking for a signature, etc.   But I promise you, 9,999 times out of 10,000, even then, you won't get a reply.

It has far more to do with his attention span and ability to "keep up with tasks" rather than a disregard for fans or any disrespect for people's requests.

It is difficult to accept COMMISSIONED ART requests, for example, because he is more a "stream of consiousness" artist, and compulsively draws "whatever comes to him" - he cannot "easily" reset his thinking or direction to any specific instruction or request without a great deal of stressful "standing over him" while he does it, and when done that way, the results are usually disappointing.

If you figure out a way to get him to complete ANY task, though, let me know because I'm STILL trying to figure out how to get him to do pretty much anything specific!

8  News and Info / News & Announcements / INTRODUCING College RADIO series "Story Of An Artist" on: September 21, 2010, 01:36:12 PM
October 2010 will see the release of SEASON 1 of the RADIO SERIES "Story Of An Artist" hosted by Daniel's college friend and tour guitarist Brett Hartenbach, with occasional guest hosts such as Daniel's college friend, David Thornberry.

Designed for late-night college audiences, the one hour program seeks to introduce new users to Daniel's prolific creativity, and offer unexpected surprises for even the most established fans.

The show will air MUSIC from Daniel's diverse catalogue as well as many HARD-TO-FIND recordings and NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASE songs along with live performance and rare recordings.

You'll also HEAR DANIEL himself talk at length, extracted from the many CASSETTE LETTERS he sent to friends in the 80's, as well as recent conversations and excerpts from interviews.

Each show will feature an INTERVIEW or SPECIAL EVENT.   The series begins with animated INTERVIEWS from people connected with Daniel over the years, including Jellyfish's Jason Falkner (who produced Daniel's latest album "Is and Always Was", Jad Fair (of Half Japanese), Jeff Feuerzeig (director of the award winning documentary "The Devil And Daniel Johnston", and MANY OTHERS!

Brett Hartenbach was a friend of Daniel beginning during Daniel's time at Kent State University branch in East Liverpool, Ohio from 1980-82.  Brett's talented guitar playing is on many tracks from songs published by Daniel, and Brett has resumed touring with Daniel beginning in 2007.  Brett's close ties with Daniel and his association with him over the years make him an excellent source for of Daniel Johnston trivia, and an reliable judge of what is fact or fiction about Daniel.   His experience in the music industry is extensive, and his research is stellar.   We expect some shows to feature guest hosts, including Daniel's friend beginning the same period, David Thornberry.

A new link featuring information, news, and broadcaster's access to the shows and music catalogue will open this week at http://radio.hihowareyou.com.

For more information, or to subscribe to the series for broadcast, contact Daniels brother, Dick Johnston, at the email address radio@hihowareyou.com.

10  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Is this t-shirt allowed? on: January 26, 2008, 02:04:17 PM
Thanks for your concern over this.

Daniel has licensed the Hi How Are You album image to 2K Gingham, and is paid a royalty for shirts sold.   If the Asos.com shirt is from 2K Gingham, that's what it is.  It is pricey, to be sure.

There's a better version coming out from WornFree soon.  I hope to put them in Daniel's web stores also, and maybe on tour.

The WornFree shirt is also a much more upscale shirt - thin and very elastic - which is apparently a popular thing right now.  We got some samples, and I have to admit it is comfortable!  You hardly feel like you have a shirt on.   That may or may not be a good feeling, I guess.   But I would pay more for a shirt like that!

There are other limited licensing deals going on, but it is our intention to make the shirts at Daniel's web sites high quality and an attractive choice for fans, because Dan does get a lot more of the money when sold from his web sites.
11  General Discussion / News Talk / Boston TRIBUTE CONCERT August 8th on: July 23, 2007, 12:05:20 PM
I've had a press inquiry about a show in Boston on August 8th which is a TRIBUTE show (different bands doing cover songs of Daniel).    Does anyone have the details of this?

Thanks.

13  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Daniel performs with LOCAL BANDS on 2007 tours - NEED YOUR HELP! on: March 05, 2007, 01:27:20 PM
In search for a solution to Daniel's touring scrupples, we've had several experimental shows where a LOCAL BAND signs up to back up Daniel during his show.   The shows with One Mississippi in Austin were terrific.   This is currently the plan for the CANADA and BELGIUM tours.

We need INPUT / ADVICE / HELP from you on the following:

1)  What, in your opinion, would be the right songs for Daniel to do on these tours with local bands backing him up?
2)  In the following list of songs, which would you vote FOR or AGAINST for Daniel to do with LOCAL BANDS in this way:

Casper the Friendly Ghost
Devil Town
Funeral Home
Go
Hey Joe
Life In Vain
Living Life
Rock n Roll EGA
Rock This Town
Speeding Motorcycle
True Love Will Find You
Worried Shoes
Walking The Cow
Wicked World

3) of those songs, we are currently lacking CHORDS for the following.  Can you contribute those (by submitting in a TOPIC REPLY in this topic thread)?:

Funeral Home
Rock This Town
Speeding Motorcycle

Thanks.

15  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Fear Yourself - Love Your Enemy on: February 13, 2007, 12:28:20 AM
I don't spend much time here these days, but looking at a SPAM report, this caught my eye.  So I ramble...

Daniel does not "think" that the U.S.A. is "evil", or misguided or even off-track.   He is not given to the current day's political mob mentality does not travel with the anti-Bush crowd.   People regularly read their private political or religious / non-religious persuasions into Daniel, and that is called "projection."  It happens.  We live with it.  Big deal!   We don't get "offended" or demand retractions.

For example, images like http://store.hihowareyou.com/images/products/S2505-Whitney-med.jpg with "God Bless America" doing a heil-hitler style salute, a swastika on his arm, and "Fear Yourself" at the bottom, is not a political commentary on the U.S.A. or a statement that the U.S. is evil.  I've asked him, and its not part of his sentiment.  If it's not possible for you to see anything except that when you look at a piece like this, then you might want to consider if you are projecting your sentiments on other things as well.

Secondly, you might want to consider that SHOULD Daniel Dale Johnston have a view about something (such as the imagery on the dollar bill as he rambled on in a mentally bizarre state), it doesn't define reality or become a cause to defend or a club to beat over a fellow man's head.

Daniel is delightfully insightful about a lot of things, and that might promote us to listen more carefully to lots of things he says.  When that happens, there's lots of neat stuff there.   (Sorry. Yes, I still use the word "neat").   However...

Depite hysterical states of his mental illness where he might speak with a lot of "conviction", he doesn't proclaim himself a medium or wizard or prophet, AND IF HE DID, you would be foolish to accept that as a VALID or TRUE statement.  (How to tell the difference is subject for another discussion)

We err if we treat what he says, means, or doesn't say or mean as a "cause" to be defended to the "verbal death"

Third, I appeal to you to hold to your senses even in this cyber world.   Don't surrender all personal respect in petty verbal disputes with your cyber brother where you surrender dignity and restraint to insult and press "SEND" for some worldly gratification in a momentary and meaningless exchange.

We give near-full lattitude in this forum, but sometimes it might be appropriate to clamor for some review of the quality and worthiness of exchanges here.

If you are to engage in battle by Daniel's definition, it is a battle we must do with ourself.  If you haven't figured it out yet, the most pressing battle with Satan is something you do with yourself and about yourself.

If you want to get excited about something, defend something, or fight for something OUTSIDE YOURSELF, let it be a a selfless and worthy thing, and let the fight will be done with respect.   When that happens, winning may "feel" like loosing.  So lose!  Because if it is RIGHT, that kind of loss is winning - This, of course, is said for those of you who can understand that kind of language - which lojomcgatta should understand.

Fourth: be FAIR in your words.   To be "FAIR" to me would not be to portray me as I am at my worse.  Neither at my rare best.   But a fair portrayal would not portray me only as my worst even in the heat of a debate - to do so would show you look only for my demise for personal gratification.

It is not necessary to be verbally abusive to make a point.  When you do that with names, expletives or disparaging speech, it does not sustain your view at all.   Period.  It doesn't do that.  It MIGHT allow you to BELIEVE inside yourself for personal gratification that you've made a point, but it injects a destructive poison in everyone who listens.

If you loose the internal battle and give in by pressing "SEND" with a petty put-down, you are forfeiting something precious in yourself that is hard (not impossible) to retrieve when lost.  Anyone who doesn't stumble in their words is perfect in every way.  We all mess up.   But we don't have to make a habit of it.

Finally logomcgatto: The original post in this thread says "Daniel displays america as the beast" - you then deny that there is any meaning except what your words insist.   Well, instead of us guessing whether you have a point or not, display the art you are talking about.   Email it to me at dejected@rejectedunknown.com and I'll post it here.

Also, logomcgatto: I might surprise a lot of people by AGREEING with many things you say, but I'm sorry to have to say: shame on you for this KIND of talk (yes, an old fashion "SHAME" statement!!) saying things like: "excatly fool talking dosent prove that i am wrong fool. I win god always wins"

Who calls other men "fools"?   Who are you to love from the heart and love as yourself?   What arrogance would cause you to declare a self-proclaimed "win" by putting others down?  YOU know what I'm talking about.

Do you think you have some great insight to tell others?  If you can't say it in love, you don't have the right to say it BY YOUR OWN VIEW of right and wrong.  Shape up or stay off the board.  Can you respond to a brotherly rebuke or is the beast in you going to have the upper hand in this?

Mentally stable or not doesn't mean you are exempt from these rules.   You will have to control yourself in regard to how you feel about and treat others while you say what is on your mind.

If you want to talk to me about this, email me at dejected@rejectedunknown.com.
