20  General Discussion / Album Chat / Daniel likes Springsteen? on: February 09, 2007, 03:10:24 PM
it might be just me, I don't know but I was listening to Cadillac Ranch from Bruce Springsteen's The River and started thinking,.. hmm i know this song but it doesn't sound like this.

and then i hear the chorus with that line "shiny and black" and thought, that sounds like funeral home!
doesn't it??

it's kinda the same melody...

so, I've never heard that he was an influence? was he? or am I just hearing things?

weird post haha

"only a very stable and positive mind" ketamine mixed with acid and ecstasy? Sounds real stable. Don't you have a job or anything to do during the day?

hmm you mean you are positive that he doesn't have a job or does something with his life? That's quite judgemental of you  wink

25  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Genius or fruitcake on: January 15, 2007, 11:12:52 AM
He just isn't that great a talent. People are merely mesmerised by a candid insight into a troubled mind and when told he is a genius go looking for it in his work.

Well, I had no idea the first 6 months or so that Daniel was mentally ill, I just heard these amazing melodies and intriguing stories. So that's not true at all what you're saying. Anyone who claims something like that doesn't know anything about great music and what it's about. When Daniel played Beatles songs like "I will" on Songs of pain, he's songs were equally good and that says alot. He's songwriting is as good as Ray Davies or Paul and john. That's how good he is. Anyone who really takes the time to listen through all those cassettes from the 80's would have a hard time ignoring that.

hmm I belive he's referring to the members section with the journals and bootlegs.

well I don't believe Daniel's material is "in danger of being extinct" as you put it. Nowadays I'd say that's more unlikely than ever.
28  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Similiar Artists To DJ on: November 09, 2006, 11:03:22 AM
so you think it's the pain that makes Daniel so great? For me it's his melodies after that comes he's very unique way of deliver his songs. The pain itself is not what comes first to my mind when I think of Daniel's work, it's just as much humour and how he manage to be so direct. But ofcourse, pain is a big part of it but not at all what makes Daniel's music so great.
I somehow have the feeling you only know Daniel from the documentary. It showcases he's life but not so much his art. It's only a small part that is shown there and personally I don't think his best stuff were included eventhough I think the movie itself is great.

"Some of Jandek's allure stems from his small but devoted fan base that includes Sonic Youth, Kurt Cobain, Mike Watt, John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, Low, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and K Records founder Calvin Johnson. In the '80s and '90s most fans stumbled into the world of Jandek after hearing his music on college radio or freeform stations like WFMU, but as the twenty-first century approached Jandek was just as likely to catch fans through the internet. An "unofficial Jandek website" was founded by Seth Tisue in 1997. tisue.net/jandek It includes complete descriptions of each album and concert and the archives of the Jandek Discussion List. Perhaps ironically, Smith himself claims to never use the internet at home."

some strange resemblances there...

well there are quite a few of these topics but okay, I'd say get the early cassettes since you will get to know all the diffrent characters in all those songs that will be the theme's of all songs that follows. Plus I personally think his lyrics and melodies are the best on those. Doesn't really matter which ones you get because all of Daniel cassettes are filled with great songs, one classic song after another. That's what so special about Daniel's music, there is not just a few great songs but almost hundreds.
