I didn't want Wickedwill to think I was a loser on the sidewalk of life so I just ordered a copy myself.  Now am I a loser for being persuaded by peer-pressure?  No.  Soon I'll be standing on the sidewalk of life reading a book.

It doesn't remind me of Dan's.  Some of it is pretty cool though.

Mask

G                    C                     A                    D
seems like her broken heart, the loving part, was missing
as the drama unfolds she's lost the art of loving
nowhere is where she goes to find her piece of nothing
seems like she's had enough but she's always up to something

and now as the story goes another day is dying
she's already changed her clothes and in disgrace she's laughing

it wasn't so long ago she had me so contated*
and with no obligation I was feeling so sedated
now I'm left pretty dumb and every bit retarded
now the fires that burn are more than what she started

and now as the story goes another day is dying
she's already changed her clothes and in disgrace she's laughing

it's just a show of shows is that all she's thinking
and maybe I told her so, I'm thankful that I'm living
another day in the past and every hour I'm haunting
everybody is wearing a mask playing skip to the lou my darling

and now as the story goes another day is dying
she's already changed her clothes and in disgrace she's laughing away

no one knows the sorrow of a broken heart that's bleeding
seems as though she never cares for no one that's despairing
more or less love and somehow she was lying
time after time she gave it all away without trying
just to take you for a ride like a bird that's falling
no one knows the sorrow of a broken heart that's bleeding
seems as though she never cares for no one that's despairing
like rain upon an open grave

*It's more likely that he's saying "temptated"

I have also been removing spam lately, and I'm guessing we're not alone, which means there is a lot of spam suddenly.  Yep I'm a regular Sherlock Holmes... or is it John Holmes?... no, it's Sherlock.
36  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Daniel Johnston Art Book? on: June 14, 2006, 01:47:52 PM
I remember a while ago there was some talk about a book of Daniel's drawings being put together.  Has there been any news on this development?  I know there is going to be a revamped Daniel Johnston Handbook coming in the fall, but I haven't heard anything about this art book.
I must say I love the idea though.  I'm hoping it's a big coffeetable book with a couple hundred of his drawings in it, and a tiny bit of text at the beginning.  I have big fancy books like that on all my favorite painters and they are most inspiring.

Often when people are looking too.
It is definately bookended by ghosts.  And there is the plane crash Casper incident, and then there is the album The Late Great Daniel Johnston.  This creates some confusion for fans being introduced to Daniel's music - I noticed some people on Myspace think he's dead.  It's reminiscient of the Beatles Paul McCartney consipiracy.  Makes everything more mythical.

Well said Henry.
I agree with all of it.
Daniel's dancing that you describe is so great because it is so ambigious.  After watching all that came before, you are left to interpret it on your own, and that was a very powerful choice made by Mr. Feuerzeig.  But I dance around like that when nobody's looking so I lean toward the optimistic interpretation.  Either way - it's not a typical epilogue/conclusion spoon-feeding.

That's a great question Henry, and I'm excited to hear your answer as well.
For me there are a lot of moments that still stand out.  When the movie first introduces Laurie, and everyone talks about her, and it cuts to present day Daniel talking about her with that footage of her moving away into the distance.... that moment was poignant and heartbreaking: The unrequited love, the transformation of Daniel, and a million things I can't put my finger on.
The absolute goodness and kindess of Daniels parents, brother, sister, best friend and Kathy all blew me away.  Such a good group of people.
Seeing (or in some cases hearing) Daniel's delusional mania was quite disturbing, and of course made me uncomfortable.  The real sadness came for me I think because I really felt like I was watching a movie about somebody I know; an old friend I haven't seen in a while.
Maybe I'll say more later, I gotta go now.

Thanks Will, you the man!  That sucks that you haven't seen it yet.  I thought I had to wait too long but if anybody was dying to see it more than me, it's probably you.
I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the film.

It felt like I'd never get to see this movie but I finally did.  It came to my town a couple days ago and I saw it tonight.
I'm still reeling actually.  I honestly didn't expect to find it so heartbreaking.  It is bittersweet though because so many people love him and want what's best for him and that makes you feel kind of warm inside about it.
It was neat seeing a few of you from the forum in the movie.  Now I can put faces to names.  And you all came off very well.
This is all kind of vague, I know, it's not a review or anything.  But you have to understand how long I waited to see this movie and now I wish I had more people to talk about it with.
I had read the book and I knew all the stories but to see Daniel's friends and families tell the stories affected me pretty deeply.  And I also feel that the director didn't resort to typical tactics of cheap sentimentality to evoke this kind of response.  So bravo.  I had lofty expectations, and I wasn't let down.
I am hoping there is more recent interviews/footage of Daniel on the DVD.
42  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Captain America Copyright on: May 31, 2006, 10:19:52 PM
I was just wondering if Marvel Comics has ever fussed over Daniel's use of Captain America, or for that matter whoever owns Casper the friendly ghost.  I know that if something is considered to be fine art legally the artist can use whatever pop imagery they want.  But I also know that when popular characters are used in work that is sold, the copyright owners often make some kind of fuss.
An artist in my town had drawings up of Disney Characters in unflattering scenerios, and I know she got a letter from Disney asking her not to.  But as far as I know she continued and that was the end of it.
