4  General Discussion / Yip! Share / Dables Plays Daniel Johnston - Tribute Live Performance Video on: November 25, 2011, 02:43:36 AM
Dables Plays Daniel Johnston is a Daniel Johnston tribute performed completely in the character of Johnston, culled from his 80's-early 90's famously awkward and weird acoustic shows. Clean shaved, skinny, shaggy hair, wearing his own t-shirt, and promoting himself by full name constantly, Johnston was known for being extremely nervous on stage and talking awkwardly about his religious beliefs, or apologizing profusely after messing up lyrics to his songs, sometimes ending them early out of frustration. He would play the guitar a little too hard sometimes, or miss notes while singing and occasionally flub a lyric or two, and every know and then really appear that his about to have a nervous breakdown right before your eyes, normally after he thinks he played "badly" in his mind. He often bows after songs, and says the titles and usually the year or album they are from and always kept his sets very short, 5-6 songs tops.

David Walker of the Greenville, SC grunge folk act Dables, tries to recreate all of this to maintain the awkward, emotional, yet funny and entertaining performances of Daniel Johnston.

If you like what you hear check out more of my tunes at www.dables.bandcamp.com or like us on faceboook at www.facebook.com/dables108

I'd buy it. But I wonder if that can ever happen again.

Why wouldn't it? Somebody buy Daniel a cheap, easy to operate digital 8 track or something and some good mics and let him have at it! I would LOVEEEEE a return to the original format of a man alone, with minimal instrumentation, recording in a bedroom. It would sell, no matter how it sounds just because of what it is, I think. Best idea ever IMO!
7  General Discussion / Fan Forums / what happened to this forum??? on: November 25, 2011, 02:25:53 AM
Seems like a html error to me, or maybe they are re-programming it or something. The entire format and look of the forum has changed and it looks worse and is harder to navigate now, what happened to it???

Personally, I would LOVE if someone gave Daniel a 4 track cassette machine or something and let him home record at his own leisure and eventually put that out. Why does he have to go the studio and have all these guest musicians play stuff? Why not just put out another home recorded SOLO effort? I would love that, and it would definitely sell.
9  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Jon Mckiel should be playing Daniel Johnston in the BIO pic... on: April 29, 2011, 02:33:34 PM
no way. also there's never going to be a BIO pic, I just don't believe it will ever actually happen.

shoot, I've been trying to spark discussion on this board but nobody responds to **** that I post.

I got something, I ordered a few of the cassette tapes and on my copy of Merry Christmas, several of the songs cut off before they finish, is it supposed to be like that, like did Daniel record it that way or is whoever is making these is not checking to make sure they finish putting the entire song on it?

Also my copy of Hi How Are You on cassette tape has an ENTIRELY different version of Poor You on it then is on the digital copy, that flipped me out.

Here's a good review/synopsis that me and friend put together in case we ever want to do it again, I've got a chord organ now and my new idea is bring a small cassette recorder and the chord organ and play a DJ song and record it on the tape all on stage and then hand the tape out to someone after I draw a frog on it. How authentic DJ tribute can you get!? Just trying to keep the things we loved about Daniel in the first place alive and still freaking people out and touching their hearts at the same time...

ANYWAYS-here's the synopsis:

Hi, I played a cover band show the other day as Daniel Johnston, doing my best to stay fully in character as DJ himself(from 80's-early 90's era), ie-nervous banter, messing up lyrics, awkward stage banter, forcing people to sing about funeral homes, and I even tried to dress up like him by being clean shaven, shaggy hair, and wearing a hi how are you shirt. It was a cover show, where all the local bands were choosing an artist to play a full set as, there was a Sabbath band there, a Nirvana band, Bad Brains, etc. I picked Johnston!

AND, I have a full album of DJ songs that I recorded you can download for free at www.dables.bandcamp.com

14  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: Pier Platters Gig on: February 22, 2011, 09:14:45 PM
but still, if you count how many times Daniel uses the words "Devil" or "Satan" in his lyrics it's gotta be a whole lot. and the devil is a pretty frequent character in his art too. Heck, there's a bunch of reasons why The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a great and suiting title. The whole pun about the devil and daniel webster is yet ANOTHER reason why it's a good title. He was not being exploited! I thought it accurately told the "myths" of DJ. I don't see what the big deal is.

BUT I would still love to get my hands on that pier platters gig!
