Your work is incredible. Thanks so much for sharing. I grew up in front of a tv, too... Now I refuse to have tv in my house. We only use it for movies these days. "The sun don't shine in your tv..."

For your own sake and ours, please read up on basic psychology before you make another post like this one. You're only serving to further stigmatize the mentally ill. One does not decide to be ill in order to get out of work. Maybe that's what you're doing, but don't assume everyone else is the same -- certainly not a talented, successful artist you've never met. Thanks.

Thank you!  I'm going to work on the site a bit tonight, add more paintings and fix the broken links.

This is something I drew today, to accompany a mixtape I made for an old friend:

I only learned about Daniel a few days ago. Someone played some of his songs in the car and I instantly loved it. I said, "Thank you so much, you have no idea -- he's my new favorite songwriter," and it's true. I went home and downloaded The Devil and Daniel Johnston and all the songs I could find and I've been listening to him nonstop since. I hadn't realized it before, but a few of my favorite artists had covered Daniel's songs. I was already familiar with Beach House's "Some Things Last a Long Time" and Bright Eyes' "Devil Town" but I didn't know they were covers. It's so exciting to hear the originals (which I like better) and all his other incredible songs. Plus, to learn that he's bipolar... it just makes me feel inspired. I'm so glad my friend decided to play that CD!!

Hi, I figured I'd take a minute to shamelessly plug my own stuff. All the links don't work because I'm really bad at making websites, but you can see some of my paintings here: http://trashsong.moon-fever.net/
I don't know if I can rightfully consider myself an "outsider artist" because I'm not completely out of the mainstream art world... I mean, I took one art class in my community college... but a lot of my work comes from a feeling of not belonging in society, my experiences with mental illness and drug addiction. That's why I call it Trash Art. Hopefully someone will enjoy looking at it. Thanks!!

Just an observation from my own experiences with mental illness and drugs: I began suffering from depression in my late teens, before I'd ever tried drugs. I was noticeably "odd" but I kept my symptoms hidden well enough that even my parents didn't notice anything wrong. I indulged in self-damaging (but not suicidal) behaviors like cutting and burning my skin, I was withdrawn but never violent. Then in my early twenties I got into drugs and began acting out a lot more until I was eventually hospitalized for self-damaging behavior and diagnosed with a bunch of things I don't completely believe, including Bipolar Disorder. Now I have been out of hospitals and off meds for two years. I've been trying to figure out exactly what happened to me. Was I really sick or just crazy from all the drugs? I don't know for sure, but my thoughts are like this: recreational drugs can only exacerbate a preexisting mental illness.

Does Daniel have a girlfriend now? It's a shame if he doesn't, he seems like such a sweet guy.

That's so awesome!  I think you've inspired me to get a DJ tattoo myself. An eyeball, maybe?
