16  General Discussion / Fan Forums / 'The Guardian' blog on: August 22, 2009, 02:06:54 PM
Just came across this blog from the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2009/aug/10/daniel-johnston

Unfortunately, he does not mention "The Angel and Daniel - Life at the Union Chapel", but I am not suprised as he does not seem to be much of a fan of Daniel's. I am notsure if this article would have made it to print. Did anybody see it?
17  General Discussion / News Talk / Re: Um, was that really elvis costello onstage with DJ at the Blind Pig? on: August 18, 2009, 01:21:31 AM
I was not at that gig, but at the one we filmed for 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston..." he announced his band mates as amoung others, Elvis Costello, John Cleese and Elton John. I think he likes to have a bit of fun with these things...

I notice that there is a 2nd November date for the Union Chapel...

'The Angel and Daniel Johnston - Live at the Union Chapel' DVD (http://www.angelanddaniel.com) might be a good way to whet your appetite in the meantime... Smiley

I am sometimes suprised at how few of the non-"headline" songs seem to get overlooked by the cover artists. Some that spring to mind are 'Evening Stars' (one of my favourites), 'The Wedding'  and 'How I love the organ music'.

I wonder if Jeff knows if there was ever a longer version of "Take a little walk" recorded? That to me would have been one of the lead candidates for the Daniel Johnston Beach Boys song. I can almost hear Brian Wilson singing it in his 60's voice. It would have been great on the 'Friends' album. I would have loved to have heard a Beach Boys produced Daniel Johnston record from that early 80's period. Or maybe Elvis Costello produced? I mean, if Daniel had turned up at Stiff Records in 1981, his whole story would have been entirely different.

It is only present in about the first 30 seconds, for the montage that starts the film.

As far as I am aware Daniel recorded mainly on little cassette recorders, similar to the external decks people used with a ZX Spectrum computer. I think he did a primitive type of overdubbing, recording one tape, then playing it back over the loudspeaker while recording on another machine (John Lennon did this for many of his home demos from the mid-60's onwards). This kind of approach could create a lot of "room sound" which could be quite reverb like in it's ambiance, especially if Daniel was bouncing tapes several times over.

I tried to recreate this kind of effect in the introduction to 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston - Live at the Union Chapel' film by playing crowd noise over loudspeakers and recording it onto a tape recorder. I do not know if anybody got that when they saw it though...
25  General Discussion / News Talk / Re: Order the North American '...Live at the Union Chapel' Now! on: May 04, 2009, 04:43:53 AM
Those of you who are not familiar with London may not be aware that the area of Islington where Daniel played is know as "The Angel".

It was actually one of the cameramen (Chris Faires) who said "What are you calling this DVD then? Surely as it's in Islington, it should be 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston'?". So with it being held in a Church building, and all the Victorian period stained glass imagery we included, it did seem to be apt.

Incidentally, an announcement about the availability of the DVD in Australia and New Zealand shall be next in the next few days.

It might be something from Sir Johnny Dankworth's orchestra.
