To my knowledge December Blues was never released.  Anyone know more about it?

This guy does -- ask him: www.myspace.com/willindiansr

It's not listed as upcoming in his discography either, but I don't know what the holdup is -- the recording was completed long ago.

33  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Re: a fan Dan Johnston tribute compilation? on: October 20, 2009, 04:04:22 PM
i am brainstorming putting together a daniel johnston tribute compilation CD and/or net download with music by the fans. daniel gets all the money. anyone got any ideas on how to make this work well? it's only an idea at this point. email me at myspace.com/derrickhartmusic or nightwinners@hotmail.com
here's my contribution for it:

Money? What money?

Anyway, I suggest you think about other performers that you like whose forum participants have assembled similar projects and ask the people who have already "been there, done that".

Lovely rendition of TLWFYITA, BTW... possibly the best I've heard, and I've heard quite a few!

Oh, and feel free to contact me if you wanna include any of my collaborations with Dan, to be found here: www.imeem.com/middlenamewayne/music

And where can one buy a copy of "How Hi Are You?"

Well, that book guy just bought one when he came by to have me sign a release.

Seriously, I do have CD copies available of "How Hi Are You?: The 20th Anniversary Edition" aka "The Very Pest of NOT Daniel Johnston!" Featuring more than 40 songs in 80 minutes, with guest stars Ray Benson [Asleep At The Wheel], Randall "Biscuit" Turner (R.I.P.) [Big Boys], Ethan Azarian [Orange Mothers], and SIX BIG TUNES FEATURING DANIEL JOHNSTON!!!

Reply here if interested or better yet, send me a PM!

Hey. Can someone tab "girls" that can be found on the CD "continued story. hi,  how are you" ? It's played together with Bill Anderson i think. I really like the riff.
Thanks^^   cheesy

I can't put it on your tab -- you have to pay cash!

Seriously, just FYI, the riff you mention may well have been played by Bill A. (most recently a member of the Meat Purveyors) but the band Texas Instruments as a whole also played on that track, which was one of the notorious demos produced by Kim Fowley (see Modern Lovers; Runaways, etc.). You probably noticed the rather prominent sample from The Runaways' "Cherry Bomb" repeated towards the end of the track!

As I recall, the guys in TI nearly strangeld Dan for insisting on that weird change at the "Hey, Elvis" part -- Bill A. can probably tell ya more about the track if he still pops in here these days...

(If someone can point me to a page that shows chords and their names, I can give you tabs for some songs me & Dan co-wrote. Otherwise, I have no idea what I'm playing half the time!)

Sounds like fun!

How could it? It's a book, not a CD!?!

Please keep us informed as to when this comes out and where one might be able to get a copy!

I'm waiting for the guys to contact me about signing a release, which I will do under two conditions. One is that they correct the wrecked punch line of Dan's "How Hi Are You?" review, which he recited to Louis Black over the phone and Louis misheard it. The second is something I will relish greatly, but it doesn't concern anything you guys would be interested in.

Anyhow, last thing I heard, I'm pretty sure the guys said that even though they're trying to get the manuscript to the publisher ASAP, the release date won't be until Fall of 2010.

37  General Discussion / News Talk / New Book Not Particularly About Daniel on: October 10, 2009, 03:46:13 PM
Some guys at the Austin Chronicle are currently at work on a book collection of all the best writing from the paper's music department over the years (1981-present) for the University of Texas Press.

What I know: Daniel was asked to provide the introduction, which he did along with providing an accompanying illustration. His review of my own "How Hi Are You?" cassette, which ran in the Chron, around '86 or '87, will also be included.

What I can guess: The book will include at least a few of the numerous articles about Daniel which have run in the paper, cuz otherwise it would be kinda stupid to have him write the foreword, wouldn't it?

40  General Discussion / Fan Forums / Steve Rogers Lives(?) on: September 17, 2009, 01:35:20 PM
According to the new Marvel Comics mini-series "Captain America Reborn"*, it looks as if Steve Rogers is indeed not dead, but is rather "unstuck in time" ("LOST" fans should know what that means!) This is just as Daniel predicted months ago!

As if that weren't enough, Dan compared the current storyline with one from the early 1970s "Steranko Era", and guess what? I've already seen a comics critic let loose a "spoiler" indicating that the Steranko story in question is liable to tie into the events of the ongoing plotline!!!

Anyone who thinks Dan isn't at the top of his game needs to reevaluate their hypotheses immediately!!!

PS: Coincidentlally enuff, I've just thought of a great short film for Dan in which he is also -- to a certain extent -- stuck in time! I can say no more. Hail KAILI!!!

*(Caveat - I've only read issue #2 of 5)

You definitely wanna ask him about the circumstances behind this:

42  General Discussion / Fan Forums / The New Improved Daniel Johnston? on: August 27, 2009, 02:37:37 PM
So, what does everybody think about the debut track from the "new" Daniel Johnston:

Personally, I think that as long as they were already going all out with the big time studio production, they should've double-tracked the vocals and added a little echo/harmonics so Dan's wispy voice is not overwhelmed by the music!

43  General Discussion / News Talk / Re: Hand shaking on: July 09, 2009, 07:37:30 PM
Is it because of the meds, or Parkinson's? Also, is that why he doesn't play guitar anymore at concerts?

Meds. Although shaking caused by meds can become permanent, which is essentially as bad as having Parkinsons. Honestly, though, it's been years since I noticed Dan's shaking being so bad that it made people mistakenly think that he was terrified of performing. Has it gotten significantly worse again recently>

Also, I am not aware of him stopping the guitar altogether. He seems to prefer it over piano, and it's likely he'd drop the keyboards first if it were up to him!!!

Has daniel had any opinions or words on the recent death of captain america?

I asked him awhile back about this, and he said he didn't believe it would be permanent. He compared the current storyline with one from the brief Steranko era in the early 1970s.

Also, I recently ran across an interview in which Dan said he wasn't currently keeping up with Cap, but I spotted an issue no more than 2-3 months old at his house around that time.
