Title: White Magic - ?
Post by: dbeefy on November 15, 2004, 11:03:52 AM
Just noticed 'White magic' added to the discography on rejectedunknown.com - is this selected tracks from the mountains of cassettes that exist?  (noticed In a lifetime is on there , full version as on the weekly mp3? That's one of my fave DJ songs at the moment.)

Anyway, cool to see another CD coming out. I'm sure others have asked this question , but have all(?)  the cassettes been converted to digital format so as not to wear out the originals? (I guess this is the case)

PS. unrelated to that , many thanks for posting the Dale Shaw radio show, it filled in a few gaps for me, and was great to hear others talking about the music&the issues around its creation. Has really whetted my appetite for the movie !

All of the Stress recordings have been converted and the cassettes that are now sold by Stress Records were made from those digitalized versions.

That's great to hear :) thanks..

I've had to do something similar with old video tape recordings , since VHS seems to fall apart after 20 years(!)

Title: Maybe about 150

Maybe about 150 of the recently identified 1500 cassettes have been converted - but starting with those that appear the oldest.  I estimate that another 800 or more exist that have not been catalogued.

Most recently I acquired a cassette-to-digital device that is making things much easier, and allows the conversion of as many as 10 a day.... that is on days when I can actually get 10 done.

still slower is sorting through the results......

By FAR, most of the material is "unusable", and maybe 10-15 percent turns out to be pre-recorded music Dan had made.

Another 10-15 percent is NOT MUSIC, but recording of live events or conversations or phone calls - harder STILL to sort through, but already he shows an AMAZING affinity for capturing significant events.

Title: The origins of WHITE MAGIC
Post by: dejected on November 16, 2004, 10:25:59 PM
Sadly, the motivation behind the assembly of WHITE MAGIC was that the TRIBUTE CD was SO VERY SLOW in getting distributed that we felt compelled to compensate everyone for the wait, and WHITE MAGIC was born.

Once you've done something like thiis, however, you've created a demand.   It also satisfies Daniel's hankering to get another CD out of old songs.

And IT IS CHALKED FULL of tracks (filled the CD to the max) and IT IS NEW and EXCELLENT stuff.   It is much more "broad" in the scope of it's content than any of the earliest cassettes, but that also gives it a broader appeal.

I'm a little confused about White Magic.  I notice a lot of songs are from the members area cassete section.  Are all the songs on White Magic from the archives in the members section?  Is it a mixture of those songs and unreleased songs?

It's a mixture - the ones previously heard in the archives include

WHen we all become famous in the Sky
Artificial Smiles
I Wish I Were Black
In A Lifetime

and probably a few others.

I just got my copy of White Magic; always great to hear unreleased old stuff from Dan. is there was a way of knowing what year each song was written and recorded?
