Title: A Texas Trip
Post by: haint on August 27, 2004, 07:32:25 AM
Hey, anyone got this?

LP - A Texas Trip - Caroline CAROL 1339, 1987
Grave City, Kill The Innocent - Stick Men With Ray Guns / All Day, Flame Grape - Butthole Surfers / In The Neighbourhood - Steve Fitch / Grievances, Don't Play Cards With Satan - Daniel Johnson

Are Grievances & Don't Play Cards With Satan the versions from songs Of Pain & Merry Christmas?

Yea I have this tape.  And no Grievances is not the same.  It's kinda a slow, hard rock verison of the song.  If I remember correctly Dan sings it in a real spooky way too.  I haven't listened to the tape in a while, I'm not sure if Cards With Satan is different but I'm assuming it is.

Sounds pretty cool!  :D

Is your tape a dub from the lp or was there a cassette release too?

In both cases, Daniel was hanging around the Butthole Surfers while they were recording, and he recited existing lyrics to his songs while they jammed on whatever musical tangent they felt like. This is why there's a third track on the album ("All Day") that features Daniel's vocals - he just "butted in" halfway through and started singing "Running Water" while they were recording the song, and they kept it that way.

FYI: While they were archiving old material for the Humpty Dumpty LSD rarities compilation CD (which also contains "All Day"), the Buttholes uncovered at least one more track, with Daniel singing "Walking the Cow" over a lo-o-o-ong jam, recorded for A Texas Trip but not released on the album. It may appear on a future BHS compilation, but they weren't too impressed with the track from what I can tell.

  - Not Daniel

For sure - are they different recordings / performances of those songs, or the same as on some other release?

Yeah - espcially if they are different, I don't have them at all.

Thanks.

Yeah, if you could send those MP3's that'd be awesome. Don't Play Cards and Grievances are some of my favorites.
