Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: favorhouseatlantic on June 30, 2005, 12:06:21 PM wow, so many songs i need.
where can i find Happy Springfield? Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: notdaniel on July 02, 2005, 06:18:33 AM Well, what are the limitations of your list (if any)?
As far as major, important classics, I didn't see "The Marching Guitars" in there. Regarding early & unreleased stuff, among others I've got a cool 1982-ish track called "Jailbait" - and someone else said they have a completely DIFFERENT song of the same name by Dan. If you're including unfinished 1980s recordings that only run 30 seconds or so, then you could throw in "Lend Me A Penny" and "Parents of Punk Rockers" and many more. Then there's songs Dan wrote more recently when I dropped in with a 4-track recorder. "Baby, Come Back To Me" would be one, from 1999 or so. And gosh, as far as the improvised tunes we've recorded on that same machine... there's at least a couple dozen, but unfortunatelye, I've never gotten Dan to give them "official" titles, so my tapes have them listed under titles like "Popped Culture" and "Hickory Stick Love" and "Mormon Nights" (that last one, actually, is the correct title - Dan's been wanting to do something special with that track!) - Not Dan At least add the first one I suggested, "The Marching Guitars", which was originally released on the "Woodshock '85" double LP from tiny Austin label Matako Mazuri Records, and is scheduled to finally be readily available when the "Devil & DJ" soundtrack CD comes out. ("Human Cannonball" is a cover of a Butthole Surfers song, by the way...) Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: ethora on November 25, 2006, 11:22:42 PM Please pardon my newfanish question, but what is the name of the song that Daniel Johnston performed on the Cutting Edge? I thought it was called "I Live My Broken Dream," but I do not see it listed anywhere as such.
Thanks! Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: notdaniel on December 04, 2006, 05:13:39 AM Please pardon my newfanish question, but what is the name of the song that Daniel Johnston performed on the Cutting Edge? I thought it was called "I Live My Broken Dream," but I do not see it listed anywhere as such. Thanks! The exact title can probably be found in the closing credits of "The Devil & DJ" but I think you have it correct (except "Dreams" is plural). If the "December Blues" album comes out as planned in the next few months or so, that song will definitely be on it in one form or another. - notdan Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: ethora on December 05, 2006, 02:55:24 PM Thanks for the reply :) The title was mentioned during the film's commentary, which is where I got it (sorta), but since I had not seen it listed anywhere else I was wondering if I was missing something. The song almost seems like it was improvised, and maybe it was so much for that moment that it was to stay there forever. Or so my imagination began to conjure... Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: King Weasel on December 05, 2006, 08:48:41 PM wow, impressive indeed, i have only a mere 270 daniel johnston songs in my collection,

Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: willymac on September 20, 2007, 07:45:33 AM i think there was a tune called "blue cloud" as well, not to be confused with "blue clouds"
but i may be wrong,so wrong Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: Henry Long on September 20, 2007, 03:40:56 PM You know how they can take an author's quotes and make a data base which then can be used to create a response to any question? Like this: http://www.perryweb.com/Dickens/puzzle_scrooge.php
(Okay, so it's the words of Ebenezer Scrooge, but Charles Dickens wrote them.) Anyway, there should be a Daniel Johnston Lyric Database for exactly this sort of thing. You type in your question, ask "Daniel" (or Jeremiah, or Casper, etc.) and they answer with quotes taken directly from the lyrics of the songs listed above. Example: Question: "What is Love?" Answer: "Love is priceless, it’s a feeling Love is ruthless, with no ceiling Love is this, love is that. Boys are dogs, girls are cats." -Ain't No Woman Gonna Make A George Jones Outta Me - Continued Story (1985) (Note: Just as an example. Daniel has about a million answers to THAT question!) Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: gina164 on December 30, 2007, 07:13:37 PM What about "Impossible." ? (different song than Impossible Love) -
I'd have to say it is the best song of his I've ever heard...that's coming from a female, though  Not on an album yet? Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: billybob on January 17, 2008, 08:51:09 AM i can add to that list:
dairy queen--i've played this one with him on stage before, i think it's from the late 90s. great song. i think the words are around here somewhere. the great tune--this is one of the songs daniel played when he first started doing shows in the mid-80s. it's awesome! is anyone else here familiar with it? poor me--this was kind of an answer song to "poor you." daniel and i came up with it in the mid-80s, around the time we wrote "ain't no woman gonna make a george jones outta me" and "etiquette." i still have a copy. with daniel, you KNOW there are a lot more out there. if i had a way to get stuff from cassette to digital form, i could probably dig up a few more. if you found 382, there are probably more like 500... Title: Re: The Number Of Daniel Johnston Songs Post by: Stress Records on January 17, 2008, 09:46:16 AM if you found 382, there are probably more like 500... Daniel once told me that if a songwriter knows how many songs he's written he's probably not a very good songwriter. I think he was paraphrasing a Hank Williams quote there but I'm not sure about that. |
