Hmmm... I have a prototype of "More Songs of Pain" entitled "New Songs, New Pain" aka "Someday You're Gonna Make It, Joe" which has a home-recorded version of "Marching Guitars" on it. Thinking about the fact that that song isn't supposed to be there I finally checked the other stuff against the discography - seems there's quite a few songs on here (most are short and incomplete) that haven't showed up on commonly available releases!

Have these songs showed up anywhere else?:

To the Tune of Leadbelly
Jailbait
Parents of Punk Rockers
Lend Me a Penny
You Could Be My Baby
Surely You Don't Work All Night

All this time I've assumed they were on one Stress tape or another, and to me they're just more cool old Daniel Johnston songs (or parts of them at least) that everybody knew!

Here's the lyrics to a couple, as a tease:

Parents of Punk Rockers (music: Piano & vocals, very '68 McCartney)

Parents of punk rockers!
Worried sick mothers!
Planned obsolescensce
Is destroying adolescence!

They're looking for love.
They're looking for lo-o-ove.
But they won't find love
In a bucket of...

Poop!

(Distorted "Yellow Submarine" SFX vocal): Oh, yeah!

Parents of punk rockers
Doo-da-da-doo, dah-doo!

(mutters) That's all I've got of that one...

(cuts to Rod Serling announcing a Twolight Zone episode...)

This one's not even listed on the tape... (Music: ukulele & vocals)

I'm dreaming of Jeannie,
And it's a nightmare.

She's mean and she's dangerous,
She stares at herself naked in the mirror.
She's vile and corrupt,
She'll bite your head right off!

Oh, Jeannie, Oh Jeannie,
You torture me in my sleep
You reek of mad passion
Like a patrack* in heat.

I'm dreaming of Jeannie
And it's a nightmare!

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

I'm pretty sure this is on one of the "stress" tapes.  I'll take a look in a bit and make sure.

It's on The What of Whom.

Yep, I noticed that after I posted. Apparently it's not on the song list on the web site, or is alphabetized somehow other than the way I looked for it or something.

Or I'm just blind...

Great find, Notdaniel smiley.
If you're willing to share, it would be a terrific upload if/when that part of the board kicks back into action.

Actually, I sent in some assorted unreleased Dan stuff a LONG time ago already, and I don't think any of that stuff ever showed up for download. Admittedly, I was GONNA send in a jam-packed CD-R of fantastic tuneage but then my CD burner went on the fritz (or into the pawn shop, I forget which it was) and I only ended up mailing off a short cassette with a few tracks -- but it was good stuff (or at least worth the price of free admission, as they say!)

If the Powers That Be let me know what's up, and/or request more trax, I'll certainly be glad to send in more! I just got a working CD-R machine back in my place, in fact.

I completely forgot about the upload area... I'll restore those folders and get that system back up as soon as I can.

Not Dan,

Does 'jailbait' go something like this?

last night I saw her
I knew I loved her
second time
I layed my hands on her
then we just laid
man came and said
that's my daughter your holding
imagine my fright
as he turned on the light
he said she's only fourteen
you know what i mean
your on your way to a cell boy....

If so I've got a couple of unfinished versions on a tape...

Would kill to hear the final thing, it's a great song!á grin

Good Golly! This "Jailbait" hain't NOTHIN' like yours! It's a pseudo-Jerry Lee Lewis* piano rocker. (What's yours sound like, and do you know roughly when it was recorded?)

Here's the lyrics to the one I've got, with rough chords for the verse and chorus in the key of "D":

JAILBAIT by Daniel Johnston (June 1982?)

(piano intro very similar to opening of "Great Balls of Fire"
 D
Oh-oh, my baby's smokin' cigarettes
             G
On the sofa by the piano in her base-o-ment(!)
               A
With the radio playin' all her favorite tunes,
G[hold]
(spoken): And men jumpin' in her mind over sand dunes.
     D
Jailbait! [repeat "GBoF" opening]

Sixteen tons of clothes and old garbage
Piled up in a pile on one side of the room
With an either-side** photograph of men on the moon
[spoken] Lined up on the floor with a broken mirror -
What a scene for a crime!
[Chorus]
       G                                           D
  Jailbait - don't you know I can't wait!
              G                                           A
  Oh, Jailbait - don't you know I can't wait!
  G                                              D
Oh, don't you know I love you so much, darlin'
                                        A
But one thing I have to face -
                 G
  You're jailbait! [repeat "GBoF" opening]

I drew her a picture of a duck
It's a phallic symbol, but I don't know what
It means,
(spoken): But I been givin' it to so many girls lately
I don't know what's goin' on in my dreams***(?)

She said she just wanted to be friends
And I, I didn't wanna get too involved
But when she let me kiss her hand...
[spoken] I swear, I was a Christian man,
But this kind of thing I don't understand!

  Jailbait - don't you know I can't wait!
  Oh, Jailbait - don't you know I can't wait!
Oh, don't you know I love you so much, darlin'
But one thing I have to face -
  You're jailbait!
  ["GBoF" rockin' piano to end!]

...and that's it! Bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp!

*very appropriate, given the subject matter!

**specifically, this sounds like "anita-size"; is there a descriptive term for a photo that would sound similar and fit here?
