After the area debut of Devil and DJ yesterday at the Paramount in Austin, during the Q & A session, someone asked if Daniel's muse Laurie had seen the film - the director and producer took that as a cue to introduce a special guest "all the way from Ohio!" Yes, it was "the" Laurie and she talked about Dan and how she still has every drawing and tape he ever sent and all that.

Or was it "the" Laurie? Daniel began to approach the stage as she spoke, then said something loudly and spun and left the theatre. I soon found out that what he yelled was a claim that the whole thing was "a hoax".

Dan was later seen standing outside the theatre silently autographing things for fans before heading off down Congress Avenue with chatty Kathy McCarty and David Thornberry. He made no further comment on the matter of Laurie.

 - Not Daniel

(BTW, the movie is even better than you can imagine, and most amazing is how much of Dan's life was already on film! The filmmakers promise "tons" of extra stuff on the DVD as well.)

At the party after the screening Daniel and Laurie did spend some time together and all went well.  Out of respect for Daniel's privacy you won't be reading about every last detail of his personal life from me.

RE: Guest's post...

Yoo hoo! First I've heard that there will, indeed, be a DVD of this (which means those of us far away from the center of the action) will be able to see it smiley.

By the way, speaking of DVDs... I go that Spanish DVD from the FIB 2003 concert. Two of Daniel's numbers are on the disc, and he's interviewed. Interestingly, "Baby You're Driving Me Crazy" is titled "Psycho" on the DVD... is this the "real" name of the song, then?

I suppose they've mistaken it for a cover of the Sonics song of the same name, which also begins with the line 'baby, you're driving me crazy'. Daniel's song is definitely derivative of that song, and starts out sounding like a cover, but takes on its own trajectory after that first line.

Also, am I the only one that's vaguely creeped out by this whole Laurie stunt? Even if she was the real Laurie (and it seems that she was after all), the whole episode obviously freaked Daniel out. Did they meet beforehand? Because, if it was a complete surprise to him (as it seems to have been), it strikes me as an irresponsible thing to do.

You’re not the only one creeped out by the whole Laurie stint.  Obviously, the filmmakers were trying to do something nice for Daniel (I think).  But on the other hand, it feels like the audience were watching an episode of Jerry Springer.  I’m surprised they didn't bring out the old Virgina lady that jumped out the window to Daniel’s cactus cafe performance in order to sing a duet.

As we all know, Daniel deals with a form of mental illness and to put that much pressure on him in front 600 people seems absurd and totally wrong.  If it was supposed to be something sweet, then why didn't they make it a private affair?  Why did they go out of there way to have a large group of people witness some reunion like that?  Because they knew that it would garner a response from Daniel that would intrigue the hip, Austin film & music community?  I consider it a form of bad judgement that someone would manipulate a situation like that for some bonus tracks on an upcoming DVD.  Sleazy.

That's showbiz I guess...

Of course it was really Laurie-Dan was just a little taken aback by her presence and her cjahnged appearance after 20 odd years.  They had a very sweet extended conversation at the afterparty and all is well.  Laurie was very classy to make the effort.

I agree they should not have done it in front of all those people. I'm sure it was done with the best of intentions but that seems a bit much! A private meeting would have been better it seems!
