Thought this was a good companion piece to Discovered Covered - quotes by other musicians about Daniel and his work, printed in last Wednesday's Guardian (UK):

His Work Just Bores Into You

S.E. Squirrel-

Wow! Good job!  Thanx for that link! I am guessing it is from the CD booklet. We'll have to wait 1 more day (arrrrgh!).

"...We've done gigs with him and it's like performing with Santa or the Easter Bunny, this mythical creature that's only existed in your imagination. " - PRICELESS!

great indeed to see that press. I've done a bit of searching on the Guardian site and have saved a couple of other DJ articles using 'Furl' which is a sort of online web page filing cabinet that you can link to...

Anyway this is the link. Warning that in amongst the DJ articles are some other, er, unusual links ! (nothing too bad really..)

Awesome!

Let us know what songs you decide to include on this Daniel J. Sampler you are gonna make. It's interesting to note what different fans think are his "essential" pieces.

quote/
The song I can never get out of my head is Funeral Home, with the line "Got me a car, all shiny and black/Going to the funeral, I ain't never coming back." There's a recording where he gets the audience to sing along like a church gathering. /

ha ha ive had that song in my head for weeks now, kinda freaking me out

as far as I know it's not about buying a car Smiley  it's about him buying a coffin. Or have I've been wrong about this all this time?

Danaisgone-
Great choices, man. Like an album, side 1 setting up the mythology, ending with Rock N Roll, side 2 expanding, begining with Speeding Motorcycle and ending with the haunting, droning Worried Shoes...very nice. Obviously some thought went into this. How'd your friend like it?

Your side B was...interesting. (although"Other Weirdos and Losers" implies that Daniel is both, which we all know, strictly speaking, is not true.)

I will have to search some of your choices out and listen for myself.
Thanx for sharing!

other weirdo's and losers is a private joke. I was going to call my album "All The Weirdo's and Losers" so it's not meant to imply daniel.
Obviously, as a fan I think he's neither.

She'll be getting the tape tonight. the link to rejected unknown is carefully copied inside, so if she like's, she'll know where to get more.

There's a few people here in town that are into Daniel. But i deffinetly get a lot of quizzical looks whenever I talk about him. I don't know what it is about daniel that i feel so much desire to spread the word, when other bands or artists i like that other people don't know of, i don't really make a big deal of getting others to hear it.

Unless it's local.. then i press it on everyone.

Oh-
Yeah, it's "coffin" not "car," but the tune is Spingsteen's "Cadillac Ranch."
The chorus (Cadillac, Cadillac /Long and dark, shiny and black) is overt.
(See following lyrics and draw your own conclusions:)

Cadillac Ranch by Bruce Springsteen

Well, there she sits buddy justa gleaming in the sun
There to greet a working man when his day is done
I'm gonna pack my pa and I'm gonna pack my aunt
I'm gonna take them down to the Cadillac Ranch

Eldorado fins, whitewalls and skirts
Rides just like a little bit of heaven here on earth
Well buddy when I die throw my body in the back
And drive me to the junkyard in my Cadillac

Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Open up your engines let 'em roar
Tearing up the highway like a big old dinosaur

James Dean in that Mercury '49
Junior Johnson runnin' thru the woods of Caroline
Even Burt Reynolds in that black Trans-Am
All gonna meet down at the Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Open up them engines let 'em roar
Tearing up the highway like a big old dinosaur

Hey, little girlie in the blue jeans so tight
Drivin' alone through the Wisconsin night
You're my last love baby you're my last chance
Don't let 'em take me to the Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Pulled up to my house today
Came and took my little girl away

Of course, Daniel's "Funeral Home" IS pure Daniel, albeit "inspired" by Mr. Springsteen. The fact that Daniel uses this tune to sing about his own demise is curious, to say the least...

(sorry for the "out of sequencing" here) huh
I know exactly what you're saying. It's like finding a secret place in the woods. You don't want EVERYBODY to go there, but it's cool to share it with the ones who you really care about. From years of making tapes and spreading the "Johnston Gospel," I have found it works best when others ask you, "What's that?" when his music is on in the background, or the L.P. cover of "Hi How Are You?" is sitting around.

Now, with the Discovered Covered, there's a whole other door into the Museum of Love that is Daniel Johnston's musical world.

It works for me too. And it reminds me of a song (You stepped on sticky fingers) by the great swedish/french band Herman Düne  :
you took the white box of a daniel johnston tape
in your hands and said :" WHAT'S THAT ? IT LOOKS PRETTY COOL"

Listen to them if you can find their cd, it's a mix between Will Oldham and The Velvet Underground.

I CAN"T BELIEVE SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS HERMAN DUNE!

That's great! Do you know Julie Doiron? they've backed her up on occasion, and i'm also pretty sure they play on her new record. Their track on the Julie Doiron Tribute record is really great as well..

I'm a bit of a julie Doiron fanboy, excuse me.

But yeah, Herman Dune is excellent.
