Those who spend their lives looking down see hell... those who spend their lives looking up see heaven everywhere.

In essence, if you look for the devil you will certainly see him... just the same as if you're looking for Jesus you'll certainly see him.

Does this remind everyone else about over-zealous parents playing Kiss albums backwards to reveal Satan's voice??? Robert Plant singing about 'sweet satan' when you reverse 'Stairway...' ?? Simon and Garfunkle promoting drugs... !??!!

The world is truly what you make it... it seems you are preoocupied with finding the devil, so you shall see him everywhere...

There are Branch Davidians still in Texas awaiting the return of Koresh... they believed he was Christ because they were looking for it.

Religion should be a personal experience... the bible itself is subject to much interpretation, its how it reads to you. Its cool to share ideas, as it is a very lofty subject... However, to attempt to force your ideals upon others is fanatic, and is a step down a dangerous path. Religion should be closely linked with our own personal ideals, and our own morals. I'm sure if we all stated our beliefs we sould find strinking differences between each other, and the way we carry out our beliefs. That doesn't make us more right or more wrong, but we need to respect each other... and not force our personal ideas on others.

What Danger???

... Purple kool-aid, anyone?

Daniel reflests this imagery in his artwork, yes... but expressing it in artwork is a far cry from jumping on a chat room and calling people the devil. If you don't like Dan's art, you can look the other way... However, when you are calling folks the devil, that seems fanatical to me.

Question though... if the world really is screwed, why spend the last time we have here worrying about the devil? ...Enjoy your time.

I said nothing against people with mental illness, and I resent that implication...

To clarify... I have friends in my life, that no matter what happens they cannot see the good things in their life, because the focus is upon the negative. bu these same people, have changed their line of thought, focused on the good things, and had great results. My personal experience, that's all.

Hi WICKED -

This has been heavily edited and ALL references to anyone you think I may have a beef with - which I do not - have been deleted - oops, except our Prez evil....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WOW...I am glad that I am at home recuperating from the spinal surgery
- there were interesting posts that I never had the time to read
before now....like this one!

My beliefs:

First of all, about George Dubbya - a bigger nincompoop as Prez has
never before been seen, and hopefully never will be again...when I
lived in San Antonio, under 'his Governor's ship,' it was a standing
joke about how he only worked half-days, and how the Governor of Texas
doesn't really have any power, unlike other states...

About his 'thinking' he was chosen by God to be Prez....well, that's
simply called "Narcissistic delusion"... or, ego maniacal thinking....
I believe there are MANY 'functional' mentally ill
amongst us...

OK...so, my 'take' on the good vs evil deal....

There is no such thing as 'a devil'...IMHO, it's a human-made
'nonexistent' entity...conceived of when the world was fraught with
death and dying (no real medical science), and people tried to appease
the also man-made 'God.'

God, having to be seen as 'the all-loving father figure,' could not
possible be responsible for 'terrible things performed by man,'
therefore, the story needed a villain, an antagonist, if you will...
and the Devil got  made up...

IF there is a God, it (not he/she!) is ALL-LOVING, and no one goes to
any Hell...that is but yet another 'delusion' of humans... NOR is God
'calculating' like human beings are...nor exclusionary, etc, like the
religious right

"Hell" exists here and now - all those who CHOOSE to not be
'all-loving' are, of course, in some sort of Hell....they cannot truly
experience love - which begins with self-love...and this also explains
'most' criminals...criminal psychiatry has PROVEN that most were not
properly loved as children...the rest have mental illnesses - whether
diagnosed illnesses or the 'illness' of just  not enough self-love,
which naturally generalizes out into love of ALL others, to not
refrain from killing others in the heat of anger...unfortunately, it also explains the everyday varieties of 'meanness' in others...

Self-love is what leads to TRUE compassion, true love, for
others...NOT a narcissistic love, but genuine self-compassion.
Sometimes one doesn't learn this as a child and must make the effort
to grieve their childhood (and sometimes grieve their religious
educations) in order to become a self-loving, responsible, mature
adult...who can face the reality of an eventual death without the
crutch of a promise of eternal life...

About expecting eternal life...well, that one is very sad to
me...

since, in my view, we should be grateful for One moment of life...
actually expecting eternal life  is IN MY BOOK unhealthy for humankind's survival...why care about global warming, etc?

OK...having said ALL of that...all of what I believe...

I agree that human good always triumphs, because one cannot escape
their own conscience....that is why it always triumphs...not because
god triumphs over a devil... LOVE is supreme...and LOVE is best for
life, and for making choices to take care of each other and this
planet...it's a simple thing....and self-centeredness and
self-righteousness is not good for our survival...

BUT, I still must FULLY admit that I do not know if there is a god,
nor does ANYONE else...

I am 100% intellectually agnostic...I believe that we, NONE of us, has
the ability to know one way or the other...and, this one may sound
funny, but IF I were God, no one should know...we should be good
because it's good to be good, it's loving to be loving...and NOT to
try to get into heaven, and get eternal life...

Obviously, I believe that those who like to think they have the truth
are not helping to advance the maturity and humility of the human race...yet, hey, of course, many peeps think the opposite....this is the nature of mankind....

Gee...I could talk about this stuff for hours
but....

As long as no one tries to evangelize (sp?), nor mix religion and
politics, nor start wars over their beliefs, I'm fine with  it....

Hm mm...has anyone seen "Jesus Camp?"
Now, THAT was a scary documentary!

Why is it some people are so deranged by their hatred of George Bush that they feel the need to rant in every possible public forum? No... don't answer that.

Heeeey. Remember Daniel Johnston? He's this great singer/songwriter who lives down in Texas. Isn't that who we're supposed to be talking about here?

Let's leave politics at the door.

Agreed. I despise Bush and his sham of a presidency beyond words, but I come here to discuss Daniel and his music. Music is supposed to be my escape from the sh*ttiness of the world today.  undecided

Hmmm...

Henry Long said, "Ha!
WE didn't send the Devil to the White House...
The Supreme Court did!!! ...okay....okay..............."

Sorry to have replied to his bringing up the Prez wink

But, nice to know El Presidente got voted as more evil than the devil in a recent AP poll! wink

My beliefs...

I'm not a "Christian" or "Muslim" or anything like that. I do have a close relationship with God; I just don't believe in religion because I feel that all of these religions came from man, not God. The reason why there are "contradictions" in religions is because of human intervention. God is perfect, but we aren't!. I personally feel that God wants us to question things rather than blindly follow just because everyone else around us is doing it...that's not faith, that is peer pressure! I don't believe in Satan...I think WE were the ones cast out of heaven, and our purpose for being here is to earn our way back, and the only way we can do that is by keeping our hearts and minds open for Him. I think *we* were the source of sin in this world. I don't believe in Hell; rather, this is it.Because when you really sit down and think about it, what is worse than not being along side your Creator?I do not fear any "devil"...I have God to protect me. I have complete and total faith in Him.

But you know what? That's just my beliefs (and I didn't go into much detail because I like to keep my faith between me and God). Follow what you feel...if you keep your heart and mind open to God, He won't steer you wrong. Besides, when everything is said and done, it'll likely be quite a lark in Heaven when we are all sitting with Him comparing notes! grin

I try not to condemn people for their beliefs. What bothers me though is those who try to force their beliefs on others. What good does that do? If you *do* get them to see it your way, then they're only believing that because they were coerced into it, not because of divine inspiration!

But then, that's just me.  I do respect others' beliefs, and I wish more people would do the same. I actually like discussing things like this. What bothered me about what lojowhatever was saying wasn't because I disagreed with him, (I think it's a him,but he/she hasn't said, so I'll just use "him" for now) but rather him threatening to track down Daniel and force a discussion with him. Much of this thread had "stalker" written all over it. Maybe that wasn't his intention, but that's the way it came across. In any case, he's dropped it, so that's good.

Love & Mercy everyone!

and u excpect me to drop it after u say i am stalking him? i will only respond to this topic only and i will say that stalking daniel is not my intentions. let me rephrase it for u billy to clear everything up. IF i see daniel at the david bowie festival in may then i will calmly and in a respectfull matter TRY to give him my point of view on a assortment of topics and no one will stop me from TRYING TO DISCUSS WITH HIM. keyword is IF i see him and TRY  those words imply that i am not stalking him. IF daniel dosent want to hear me I WILL IMMEDIATELY STOP TALKING AND WALK AWAY just as i am doing in this forum with exception of this discussion cause THIS DISCUSSION IS JUSTIFIED because you have accused me of being a stalker which gives me the right to break my word to explain myself. THANKYOU

Let me restate...

Quote

To clarify...that's how it was coming across. You've stated your intentions, which cleared up that misconception. I apologize for not wording it better. In all honesty, that was the way it was looking. I'm not the only one who felt that  way. But hey, it was a misunderstanding, everything's cool. Sometimes things posted on a message board come out wrong...it's not like actual conversation where it's easier to understand someone's intentions by inflections or vocal tone. Anyway, you dropped it, and so will I.

Love & Mercy.
