Joke or not, the fact is most people aren't acquainted with Daniel's music, and many fans of the artists on the tribute album will buy it because those artists are on there... and THEY'RE going to think that Daniel's dead.

Daniel's music is joyful, sad, tragic, playful ... but the tribute title and cover, to me, doesn't reflect his music at all - it just seems to be either an ugly prank (for those who don't know he's really alive), or a downer (for those who do).

Doug, I'll have to say that your reticense over the title is something that makes me pause and re-think my view.  I certainly respect  you ability to weigh album the pros and cons of such things.

(for others who don't know - Doug is the author / editor of the Beatles outtakes books)  Take a look here:

At any rate, it's history, now.

In support of your perspective, not "everyone" is familiar with Van Zandt or his album of similar title, either.

Well now since we got some of Daniels fans viewpoints on this lets get the reaction of a newcomer. recently i was in a music chat room and i was talking to this guy who did not know of Daniel so it being my duty i started to sing the gospel of Dan to this guy and i linked to the best site  Cheesy  and lo and behold the first thing this guy says was "what did he die from?" smiley leaving me to go into detail all about the cover, which was cool it just left me more room to preach the greatness of the music, but it was the fact that it is not only (imo) a bummer but totally misleading as to what its all about. i have seen someone say it was beautiful and in a way it is but its not appropriate for this release. i know i was the first to bag on the cover and have been real upfront about,so i will let it rest but i thought you folks would like to know a new potential fans reaction!  smiley  smiley

they way i see it, it's just the cover we are looking at.

In the liner notes it might explain that daniel IS alive or whatever.
at least i hope.

I like the cover visually, but i hope that it is made clear to the fans of beck and Tom waits and whatnot who pick this up and don't know anything about him, that daniel is alive and aparently doing well.

well my 2 cents is that although my first impression of it was rather ambivalent, i kind of like the cover in all its creepiness, w/ daniel himself looking at his own grave. so many of his songs do deal with death & dying & graveyards & morticians and such that to me it doesn't seem not to jibe w/ his music. on fun there's that live recording of funeral home where he's encouraging everyone to sing along b/c we're all gonna die, it's happening all the time, to millions of people, etc.

anyhow, even if people who do pick it up think at first that he is dead, i would think they'd find out the truth sooner or later, if their interest is at all piqued & they buy tons of his early music then that's great too, and they'd have to realize sooner or later that he's alive.

And then there was a deafening silence, as the players slouched at their keyboard, exhausted from the heated exchange, each pausing to catch their breath, each privately glad the conflict had paused,  each waiting for the other to make a move

There was no winner.  No clear looser.  Only private exhaustion from the verbal horn-locking.

We held our breath, waiting to see if it was really over...

I could weigh in on the cover if you really want me to...  Cheesy     There's quite a bit I could say about both the cover and the marketing plan without it turning into a personal attack. Or I could tell you what I really think about the label involved but it would only depress people and you'd probably want to shoot the messenger.   afro

Great choice on the Cactus!
