a weeping daniel???

is it me or does it sound like during the song "careless soul" off of 1990 does daniel start to cry during the song or is it the way he sings? sounds to me like he starts to cry.

I don't know but I've heard a couple songs where he cries (one was off of one of the lost recording tapes).  Also if you have the new re-issued Jad Fair and Daniel album there's a video of Dan playing Don't Play Cards With Satan.  Pretty much towards the end of the song he starts to cry and get very emotional....it's amazing.

There is video tape of Daniel singing this careless soul  - in a bookstore singing several of the 1990 songs - and he is very emotional, voice cracking from emotion, etc.

The song was sung kinda spontaneously, from the look of it...

Okay, here's the way I see it: He's drawn you in with the heavy emotional, soulful song (it IS a fantastic, gut-wrenching performance, by the way), and then the camera slo-o-o-wly pans up his arms to a closeup on his trembling face; there's a long, slow, uncomfortable pause... Then he suddenly pulls a "180" -- he throws on a silly Andy Kaufman grin, cocks his head and whips out his album with a "buy it now, folks" look on his face, and plays the goofy cartoon "shave anna haircut, two bits!" ending on the organ. That doesn't make you laugh??? That's a typical Daniel switcheroo!

Okay - this video is on some CD or something somewhere - am I wrong about this?   It seems like it would have to be 1990.

As far as the switch-er-oo, there is nothing artificial about Daniel's transition from sullen to glib.   It is a decided and instant switch - but doesn't make the sullen part "ingenuine", "pretended", or "acted".  

As a matter of fact, the glib-humor is a typical human behavioral cover that follows an emotional stint - it breaks the uncomfortable-ness of bareing your emotions by laughing about it.

I wouldn't even say that the kind of humoresque after-math is unusual or manic depressive behavior - it is pretty normal human behavior - and lest we forget, Daniel is human.
