Hi folks...according to anti.com, none other than Tom Waits will contribute to the Daniel Johnstone tribute disc.  I'm a huge Waits fan as well, and have never heard him mention Daniel in any interviews.  I suspect  Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) may be responsible for exposing Waits to Daniel's music.

As for Mercury Rev, they are amazing.  I'm really drawn to "The Dark Is Rising", which to me sounds like a lost Daniel song. Ciao...

Tom Waits has been a fan for well over 10 years.  In the early 90s he filled in as host on a radio program in LA and played a bunch of tracks from Hi, How Are You.  He also spoke highly of Dan in a New York Times interview about a year ago.

Well, that brings us a strong hint on who is the "secret" special guest singer on the Sparklehorse´s track on the tribute...

Tom Waits had a special appearance on Sparklehorse´s latest album, so.....

Well, i just would like to know which track they´re covering....

Lonely Entertainer?

Well, If they are really covering this song I`ll be very curious on how they replaced Daniel´s "Smurf Guitar"

Becks cover is such the real deal.  It was sung from the heart.  A Beck classic for sure.

i bet Sonic Youth or Lee Renaldo will be onit..   i met Lee
and talked to him for a few mins about Daniel.. i know he's
a big fan..
wouldnt it be cool if somewhere in the Cobain/Nirvana archieves
in vault, if they (or just Kurt) recorded a cover of a Daniel
song and it went on the tribute..
also Pearl Jam covered Walking the Cow and Built To SPill
covers a song.. so i bet the list will be VERY impressive!!!!!

I'm pretty convinced that Sparklehorse will be on it. It would be really strange if he's not because of all his involvment in Daniel Johnston and especially the work he did on Fear Yourself.

By the way, for anone who hasn't heard the PJ version: I searched out a bootleg of the Bridge concert with them performing it (real professional disc - good packaging and excellent soundboard recording) and I can tell you truthfully that it sounds almost EXACTLY like the Lucky Sperms* 45rpm single of the song. Eddie Vedder obviously learned the song from that record, but I don't know whether he ever heard the original or not.

In any case, I "donated" the CD to Daniel (before I got my CD-R recorder, dang it!), since he had never heard it either. Wonder if he's lost/sold it yet?

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

With backup by the Flaming Lips by any chance? They'd be a nice addition to the lineup either way - maybe I'll see Wayne Coyne when he's in town next week and ask 'im about it...

PJ did a radio show one time (boy I can't remember the exact year but I'd say around '94 or '95) where they hosted for a couple of hours playing songs they like and such.  Guess what one of the first songs was....yep Walking the Cow.

CD given to Daniel

NOT DANIEL:

How was the CD you gave Daniel marked?   Describe it to me - It may exist as a bunch of CDR's were retrieved from Daniel studio for safe storage and I know where they are.
