It's not just here, but my other favorite forum has been getting hit really hard within the past three days. Mostly medication stuff and ads jobs in India but lately there has been some pretty raunchy stuff in there. I don't get it, don't these people have anything better to do?

Drew is attempting to solve this issue as I write this, and as for "isnt someone supposed to be takin care of this?" that would be me, or any other moderator who happens to still be with us and online. I check twice a day and usually remove between 5 to 10 topics of spam. That's the extent of a moderator's capacity to do something: delete it. The rest is up to Drew, who is trying to stay one step ahead of the spammers, many of whom are actually computer programs. So it's difficult, and it's all about updating the boards with the latest software versus spammers and hackers and computer programs also updating with their "software."

Until our software updates, please be patient. Don't read these spam posts. You know what the topics look like by now, so why open it? Just ignore them and at least twice a day, I will be deleting everything. Nothing spam-wise rarely ever lasts on here more than 24 hours anyway.

Hey Guys,

I did the upgrade today and made the registration captcha a bit different, so hopefully we'll notice an improvement!

If we don't notice an improvement we may just move over to a different forum software.

Thanks!  smiley

Yeah that one appeared within an hour of the previous cleanup.  Thanks Drew, Henry, Will and anyone else who is working to keep that stuff out of here.

Ok,

Taking one more shot at this before I search for alternatives.

I've increased the captcha difficulty to high and required all new members to confirm their e-mail address as well as be approved by an admin before they can post.  So if I still get lots of registrations in my inbox now I'll definitely find something new that works to keep stuff out of my inbox!  tongue

They've clearly figured out how to get around SimpleMachine Forums, and there are some plug-ins that use Akismet Spam Protection to moderate post-by-post... so I'll be looking into other options like that.

Thanks everyone!

Also, for those interested, here's some information on this:

Apparently everyone is having this same problem.

Drew, do you reckon the guest number reads true, or that might represent a few lurking bots?

Rob,

I know the forum accounts for known bots (like Google, Yahoo, etc)... but it won't know spam bots, so it's likely a lot of those "guests" are spam bots.

Since yesterday we've only have one person (or bot??) successfully go through registration, so hopefully that helped!
