Hello there. This is my first post. I've basically discovered Daniel's music a few months ago and collected most of his stuff and been listening to it non-stop.

I was wondering about a particular song that I can't seem to track down. It was a song that Daniel played on the MTV Austin Special in 1985 and that appeared in 'The Devil and Daniel Johnston'. I don't know if it's maybe on 'The Lost Recordings 1 and 2' as they seem to be the ones I haven't got just yet from that era.

Also, does anyone know if there is an album that features a studio version of 'Silly Love'? I know there's a live version on 'Fun'.

Sorry! Found it here! http://messageboard.hihowareyou.com/index.php/topic,539.0.html

Turns out it was 'Broken Dreams' and a few people have asked about it.

Some first post, eh?

The "Silly Love" on Fun is the studio version. I believe live versions appear on 'Live at the SXSW' and on 'Why Me'.

Oh thanks! A friend of mine copied 'Fun' for me so I don't know why he must have put a live version of 'Silly Love' on instead! I was a bit wary of 'Fun' at the start because it was on a major label  but I think it's really great. I'm not sure what to get next. What would anyone recommend first between: 'Lost Recordings', 'Fear Yourself' and 'Lost and Found'?

I never really "got into" either of the Lost Recordings tapes to the same degree as their previouly-released counterparts. They just don't seem to have as many great songs per tape as the "proper" cassettes" do.

Fear Yourself, as well - despite seeming like a great concept - seemed to be "missing something" when I first heard it, though it's grown on me somewhat. Specifically, I've grown to love every 3rd track (as in #3, 6, 9, & 12)!

However, I co-wrote the song "Rock Around the Christmas Tree" on "Lost & Found"* and I also sing back-up and play drums on it. So, clearly without bias, I can assure you that "Lost & Found" is the best of the albums you listed. If you can manage to get a copy, that is -- I still have to make do with the old CD-R copy I got from producer Brian Beattie along with my paycheck.**

PS: Lost & Found was all recorded at the same time as Rejected/Unknown, so if you like one, you will like the other. Enough material still exists for a third album from those sessions, though it might not be quite as high-quality as the first two.

*(I doubt if I got a songwriter credit on the L&F version, but that's fine since the song was altered a great deal between our original improvised take*** and the actual finished version as heard on the CD.

****(Oh, and once again, people -- PLEASE tell me if you have trouble playing the songs on my IMEEM page, and whether you can download them or not. I'm completely lost as to how things work there!)

They laughed when I sat down at the piano.
They didn't think that I could play.
But their laughter turned to amazement,
When I got back up and carried it away...

I felt the same way upon my first few listens, but those are really great songs. The ones that really stick out to me in terms of "great Johnston numbers" are: "I'm A Song, You Ruined it For Yourself, Scattered Like Birds, Void, I'm Nervous, Cosmic Kid, Love Is Weird, Burn Baby Burn, No Fun, I'm Gonna Buy Me A Car, How I Love The Organ Music, and The Wedding.

myohmy - I just got Fear Yourself and if you like Fun it's worth a listen.

Cheers notdaniel and Green Monkey. I managed to have a listen to 'Lost and Found' and it is pretty great. I wasn't that keen on 'Rock This Town' when I heard it on the 'Late Great..' compilation (probably because I was more into the early stuff at that point) but I really love that song now.As well as 'It's Impossible'.

I think I might go for 'The Lost Recordings' next as I feel the need to get more early stuff. Will go for 'Fear Yourself' after (Good news as I'm particularly fond of 'Fun')

notdaniel that's some nice drumming on 'Rock Around The Christmas Tree' by the way!
