hi! i'm aaron, and i've finally joined here, after lurking for ages...
maybe i can clear up some confusion...
i saw him last night in chicago, and it was amazing...
he's doing what he did last year and having a local band open the show, and then having them back him for part of his set...
the breakdown was like this:
daniel-two solo acoustic songs...
then his buddy from college came out and played acoustic guitar for him, for around ten songs... then dan took a little break and came out and did the band thing for a bit.
all in all, it was wonderful... highlights for me were:
grieviences, life in vain, you've got to hide your love away, speeding motorcycle(w/ band), and rock n roll ega(w/ band)

Daniel was fantastic in Minnesota!!!

he looked GREAT, sounded better than I ever expected, he was on the top of his game.
His voice had a gravely sound, full and bold.
He could have played all night and I would still have wanted more.

He did Mask, and mean girls both are songs I'd hope he would play. woohoo

and like the show in Chicago "grieviences, life in vain, you've got to hide your love away, speeding motorcycle(w/ band), and rock n roll ega(w/ band) "

rock n roll ega was awesome, I have a new found love for that song after hearing him belt it out.

I hope someone from tonights show has a better memory of what all he played, I was too into it to remember. When he was talking he pretended he didn't know where he was performing and had the crowd yell out Minneapolis then acted like he didn't hear... later he made a remark about 'Purple Rain'. lol. it was a grand night that's for sure. We weren't standing at the stage railing but one row behind the hardcore First Avenue gang, we were up close for a perfect view.

standing in line waiting for the doors to open we had a chance to visit with other Daniel Johnston fans that was exciting...my husband figured we were the oldest fans there. Smiley Chris from Buffalo told me I didn't fit the profile hahaha He figured most people Daniels age don't get it.

A great show!  Daniel sounded great, though he said he had a bit of a cold (I think that actually added a nice gritty-ness).   The big highlights for me were Life In Vain and Living Life.  Here's the set list:

Feb 8 , 2008, First Ave, Minneapolis, MN

Solo Acoustic (on a strange little guitar)
Mean Girls Give Pleasure
Some Help (not sure if that's the title)
Mask
     With Brett Hartenbach on Guitar
Life In Vain
Living Life
Silly Love
Hey Joe
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
     With band
Speeding Motorcycle
Mountain Top
Fish
Love Not Dead
Rock and Roll / EGA
     Encore w/ Brett
True Love Will Find You in the End

I read some of the reviews from Daniel Johnston's performances in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Omaha.
Either I watched him with rose colored glasses or MN got the BEST of the best. It was amazing!
