Daniel Johnston started his tour in Ottawa last friday (may 4) and I was lucky enough to get to sit through his sound check.  Local Ottawa muscians who happen to be DJ fans knew his songs well enough to back him for the show.  they have a different set of musicians for each show of the tour.

It sounded great in Ottawa.  DJ was on fire.

Anyway, I had setup an audio interview for an upcoming Podcast but as time was dwiddling down, his brother Dick suggested my Podcast partner and myself join them on a trek to the local comic book shop and then out to dinner.

They were kind enough to buy us and their entire backing band dinner at a local Korean restaurant.

The podcast will be ready in about a week or so.

Here's a photo from the comic book shop:

Nice pic. I wonder what he's reading. Looks like one
of Marvel's "Essential" reprint titles. Do you remember what,
if anything, Daniel picked up?

Looking forward to the interview...could you transcribe for us here?

A stack of random comics from a $1 bin.  He chose them based on their cover art.  There was also some thick comic that was all black and white and "marvel essentials" sounds right. Is that a compilation, because that's what I thought the big comic was described as.

Yeah, their "Essentials" collection are thick black and white reprints of all original issues, usually reprinting the first 20 or so of a comic, like Fantastic Four, which is up to Essential number 5 (issues 84 through 110). They're alot of fun, sans color even, and there's a lot of GREAT Jack Kirby stuff available. DC does it also, under the title "Showcase Presents."

I also now recall it being Captain America.  I think that he said it was his favourite super hero.
