First of all I'd like to know if the eye with wings really is a creation of Daniel. If it isn't then pay no further attention to this post.

I was watching the Simpsons today and in the middle of the program I saw it; the yip eye.
Isn't this a creation of Daniel or am I completely wrong?
Right away when I saw it I thought that this must have been some kind of dedication Matt Groening did to Daniel.
(Matt Groening is the creator of Simpsons and a big fan of Daniel)

It's the episode where the Simpsons family is visiting a store which has alot of old "junk" for sale.
The yip eye is located behind the salesman in the store through out the scene.
The salesman (called John and is homosexuall) is then invited home to the simpsons because homer wants to get rid of some old stuff that the salesman finds valuble.

Anyone know anything about it?

Okay, so you're talking about this symbol? :

That's interesting, and I'll get word to Daniel.  It is thought of as "original" with Daniel, but its hard to imagine that such a simple symbol is unique.  Nevertheless, it may be because it has the lines of the eye extended beyond the intersecting lines for a reason.

Early forms of it was a cross between an eye and an ICHTHOUS symbol (early Christian symbol or a fish) - by removing the lines beyond the intersection on one side of the eye.

In fact - that is what Daniel was arrested for at the statue of liberty - putting those images up!  He was kinda out of his head at the time...

If it's in the show, I'm sure that Groening put it in there, because he is a personal friend of Daniels as well as a supporter - and that sounds like something Matt would do.   Of course he has all kinds of references to celebrities  and hidden meanings throughout the whole series....

Well, actually it's more like... hmm. Have you got Daniel's "Songs of Pain And More Songs Of Pain" (the the first of many to come releases of his old stuff)? Guess you have it... If you look inside the inner booklet on the second page (where the page starts with "1980"). On the left of the text there's a drawing made by Daniel that has these eyes with wings, only in this drawing the wings look like bat wings, apart from the purple one.
It's a bad example I know but I couldn't find "the real thing" but I swear I've seen it in a couple of his drawings. Could it be that the eye in the Simpsons episode is another symbol, a kinda famous symbol that's ancient or something?? In that case it has nothing to do with Daniel other than the fact that he's included it in his work but since Matt is a friend of Daniel I just made the connection.
And yes it would be great if Daniel had any comments on this!

I think the flying eye symbol is pretty old, as in Alchemic texts and the like. My guess is it goes back to 16th century European woodblock illustration, but there are elements there that can also be Ancient Egyptian.

It pops up alot in the so-called "Low Brow" art movement of Big Daddy Roth and other "Juxtapoz" artists, where it's been employed in everything from body art to car and motorcycle detailing for years.

As for Daniel's use of it, again, he is tapping into something archetypical, making it personal as a symbol, which is a universal idea. As with any true artist, whatever he touches he makes his own, diving into that great mystic sea we all dip our toes into!

Haunting. No?

Okay, I think you mean this:

There are some of those on the RejectedUnknown.com Daniel Johnston store right now in "Look out.  The Evil Plan has ended."

Well, my reaction is that that is very much Daniel's.   There may be something to the medivial origins, but that is news to me.   Again, I would guess that if it appeared in the episode that it was there because of Daniel - but HEY, let's find out.  Let's bombard Simpsons and Fox TV with inquiries about it!!    I'll see if Daniel will ask Matt himself.

We'll need to find the episode number - probably from the Fox TV web site, etc.

Here are two other "elaborate" variations on the "flying eye".   That first simplistic eyeball is what he uses with the label name "Eternal Yip Eye Music".

That "medivial" flying eye is in a piece on RejectedUnknown.com right now called "Look Out The Evil PLan Has Ended" :

Look at the simple and complex form of the Eternal Yip Eye on the second page called "We'll Never Get Out Of Here!"
